Regina's Own Carson Sombach Signs With the Defending Grey Cup Champions

The defending Grey Cup champions are keeping it local. On Monday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders announced they have signed University of Regina Rams safety Carson Sombach, a born-and-raised Regina product, ahead of rookie camp. Sombach had a standout 2025 season with the Rams, earning U SPORTS Second-Team All-Canadian and Canada West All-Star honours, and his most memorable moment came in Week 2 when he returned an interception 109 yards for a touchdown, the longest interception return in University of Regina history.

Over his seven-season Rams career, Sombach recorded 152 tackles, four interceptions, 11 pass knockdowns, and a blocked kick. He impressed scouts further at the 2026 CFL Combine and now gets to put on green and white in front of the city that raised him. The Roughriders also added Regina Thunder running back Peter Boersch, who led the Prairie Football Conference with 1,436 rushing yards last season, to the camp roster alongside Sombach. Local talent earning their shot at the highest level.

🛡️ COMMUNITY SAFETY

Henry's Law Is Now Official: CO Alarms Required in Every Suite in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan made history on Tuesday. The provincial government formally announced that carbon monoxide alarms will be mandatory in every residential suite in every multi-unit building in the province, with the changes officially named "Henry's Law" in honour of 11-year-old Henry Losco, who died after a malfunctioning boiler leaked carbon monoxide into his family's Regina apartment in December. Marina Hills and Sergio Losco joined Minister of Government Relations Eric Schmalz and NDP MLAs at the announcement, and the family met with Premier Scott Moe before the news conference, with Moe offering his condolences. The requirement takes effect November 1, 2026, for both new construction and existing buildings.

Marina Hills said at the announcement: "We want laws that help save people, and families, and children. This was exactly what my son would have wanted, to see people working together." The changes represent a rare moment of unanimous cross-party action, with both the government and the NDP working together after the Opposition stood down its own private member's bill to let the regulatory process proceed. Officials say Saskatchewan now leads the country on CO detection standards in multi-unit housing. If you live in an apartment or condo, check that your unit has a working CO detector today.

⚡ CITY UPDATE

Regina Transit's Full Fleet of 20 Electric Buses Is Now on the Road

Regina Transit reached a milestone last week. The City of Regina confirmed on April 30 that 13 new battery-electric buses have joined the transit fleet, completing a 20-bus order placed in 2024 and replacing 13 diesel buses that had reached the end of their service life. The 20 electric buses now make up 16 per cent of Regina's 123-bus fleet and can be found on routes across the city.

The battery-electric buses produce 40 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than diesel buses and cost about half as much per kilometre to operate. Since the first seven buses launched in April 2025, the city has saved more than $250,000 in fuel costs. Mayor Chad Bachynski noted the buses have performed on par with diesel vehicles through all four seasons, including a full Saskatchewan winter. The full 20-bus fleet is now in daily service. You may already have spotted them on your commute.

Regina's ideas festival is back, and the lineup is worth getting excited about. Set for May 29 at the historic Darke Hall, TEDx Regina 2026 will feature nine Saskatchewan-connected speakers covering everything from artificial intelligence and food security to space exploration, Indigenous leadership, and the future of work, all under the theme Once Upon Our Future. 🎭 ARTS & CULTURE

Little Red Warrior & His Lawyer Is Playing at Globe Theatre Right Now

If you have not made it to the Globe yet this spring, you have until May 17. In this courtroom comedy, the last member of the Little Red Warrior First Nation discovers a condo development tearing into his ancestral land and fights back. What follows is a collision of justice, Trickster mischief, and unexpected romance as Red moves in with his court-appointed lawyer and the lawyer's wife, who soon starts seeing Red in a whole new light. Written and directed by Governor General Award-winner Kevin Loring of the Nlaka'pamux Nation, the show arrived in Regina after successful runs in Calgary, Victoria, Vancouver, and Ottawa.

It blends land politics, legal absurdity, Trickster spirit, and a rom-com sensibility into something sharp and distinctly Canadian. Grab downtown dinner before the 7:30 PM curtain and make a proper evening of it. Tickets and schedule at globetheatrelive.com.

Residential Spring Sweep Is Underway: Move Your Car or Risk a $120 Ticket

The spring street sweep has reached your neighbourhood. The City of Regina confirmed on May 1 that the sweep has entered residential neighbourhoods, with crews cleaning over 1,000 kilometres of residential roads over the next six weeks, working Monday through Friday between 4:00 AM and 10:00 PM. Bright orange signs will be posted at neighbourhood entrances before crews arrive, and any vehicle left on the street during sweeping can receive a $120 ticket and be towed.

The sweep removes winter sand and debris from roads before it enters the sewer system, and it is one of the most practical signals that summer is on its way. To find out exactly when crews will be in your neighbourhood, download the free Sweep&Plow app or enter your address at regina.ca/Sweep. If you see sweeping equipment, slow down and give crews plenty of space to do their work.

🚨 COMMUNITY BRIEF

Emergency Preparedness Week: Test Alert Today at 1:55 PM

May 3 to 9 is Emergency Preparedness Week in Saskatchewan, and this year's theme, "Be Prepared. Know Your Risks," is a call for residents to take simple, practical steps before an emergency happens. A test of the provincial SaskAlert emergency alert system is scheduled for today, Wednesday May 6, at 1:55 PM. The test alert will appear on television, radio, and compatible wireless devices and through the SaskAlert app. Do not be alarmed when your phone buzzes this afternoon.

Beyond the test, the week is a good reminder to build or top up your home and vehicle emergency kits: a 72-hour supply of water, food, medication, and basic supplies for everyone in your household. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has a full checklist and family planning guide at saskatchewan.ca/emergency-preparedness.
