Happy Wednesday, Regina! 👋
The snow found us again! Stay safe out there, give yourself more time to get to your destination if walking, driving or taking the bus today. Pue and Tabashniuk sweep the WHL's weekly honours
Two Pats were the best in the league at their positions last week. On Monday, the WHL named Liam Pue its rookie of the week and Taylor Tabashniuk its goalie of the week after Regina won back-to-back games at the Brandt Centre. Pue put up four goals, five points and a plus-4 rating over that stretch, highlighted by his hat trick and four-point night in Friday's 6-2 win over Moose Jaw. The 16-year-old now leads the Pats with 18 points, fourth among all WHL scorers. Tabashniuk posted a .949 save percentage in the two wins, including a 6-0 shutout of Seattle.
The good news didn't stop there. Forward Mathis Paull, 17, landed on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary players to watch list for the 2027 draft with a "C" rating, which projects him as a fourth- or fifth-round pick. He's one of 54 WHL-developed players on the list and won the Nick Pappas Rookie of the Year Award as the Pats' top rookie last season. Pue is also heading to Oakville, Ont., to play for Canada Red at the U17 World Challenge from Nov. 1 to 7, while teammates Maddox Schultz and Logan Henry will suit up for Canada White. The Pats are back at the Brandt Centre on Sunday against Lethbridge.
The kids are alright. Better than alright, actually.

Payton Collins stays in green
The Riders have their left tackle locked up for another season. Payton Collins signed a one-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. The 6-foot-7, 301-pound lineman joined Saskatchewan in May 2025, won a starting job out of his first training camp and went on to be named the club's Most Outstanding Rookie on the way to a Grey Cup. He has played 29 games since arriving, plus last year's Western Final and Grey Cup.
His coach and his quarterback were quick to back the move. Corey Mace said offensive tackles are tough to find anywhere, and that it was clear early in camp the team had found one. Trevor Harris, who led the CFL with a career-best 5,370 passing yards behind that line, called Collins dependable and said he has a big future in the league for as long as he wants to play. The same group cleared the way for Tommy Stevens' record 17 rushing touchdowns. Next up is Saturday's West semifinal against the B.C. Lions at B.C. Place.
⚖️ COMMUNITY
Legal Aid launches a $2M-a-year Indigenous justice program
Legal Aid Saskatchewan is building a new team to help Indigenous people through the justice system, and two of its advocates will be based in Regina. The Kintohpatatin initiative, announced Oct. 26, pairs legal advocacy with community-based services. The Law Foundation of Saskatchewan has agreed to fund it with $2 million every year. That money will cover 10 regional community justice advocates, cultural programming, client support, staff training and program evaluation, along with a dedicated program manager to run it all.
CEO Jayne Mallin said the program is off to a good start, with job descriptions now being written. The launch lined up with National Duty Counsel Day on Oct. 27, which recognizes legal aid lawyers who offer free, often immediate help to people going through court without a private lawyer. Legal Aid is also bringing duty counsel into child protection matters, so families facing those hearings have someone in their corner on the day it counts.
Help that shows up when it's needed most.
🏙️ CITY UPDATE

Council weighs $3M for downtown homes
City council meets at 1 p.m. today at City Hall, and new housing downtown is near the top of the agenda. Councillors will vote on an executive committee recommendation to create a pilot program offering capital grants for market housing in the Downtown and Centre Square neighbourhoods. The pilot would get $3 million: $1.5 million moved over from existing rental acquisition, repair and pre-development grant programs, with the rest coming from unallocated Housing Accelerator Fund money. Council will also look at extending the downtown office-to-residential conversion pilot through 2027.
Under the proposal, developers would get their grant money in stages: when agreements are signed, when development permits are issued and when construction is done. Road safety is on the table too. A motion would have city staff build a Pedestrian and Cyclist Protection Strategy Action Plan covering road design, education, enforcement and policy, with a focus on kids, pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users. That plan would come back to council in the third quarter of 2027. The meeting will also air later on Access Communications' AccessNow Community Channel.
More neighbours downtown and safer crossings. Worth keeping an eye on.
🎃 HALLOWEEN
Your Halloween game plan
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and Regina has a full day of free fun lined up before the doorbell starts ringing. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum opens with a Halloween BOO-gie storytime and dance for kids 3 to 6 at 10:30 a.m., then keeps things going until 3 p.m. with a scavenger hunt, bats, dermestid beetles and touch-and-feel boxes. Wascana Centre's ecology team hosts Spooktacular! at Wascana Place from 1 to 4 p.m. with a "Survival of the Fittest" theme, live animals, owl pellet dissections and crafts. Both are free.
Want to collect some candy before dark? Participating stores at Southland Mall (look for the balloons) hand out treats from noon to 3 p.m., and Victoria Square picks up from 3 to 6 p.m. with a costume parade, costume contest, face painting and a photo booth. Runners can start the day at the Saskatchewan Science Centre's Halloween Run and Walk at 11 a.m., with 3K and 5K options and package pickup Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. And yes, the Riders play that night too.
Costume on by 10:30. Candy bowl full by kickoff.
