It's shaping up to be the hottest stretch of the summer so far, with highs climbing to 34°C on Saturday and clear skies holding right through the weekend.

Two Alberta girls got the RCMP treatment of a lifetime at Depot this week, the Pats added another piece to their blueline, and Thursday night's showdown at Mosaic Stadium came right down to the final play. Let's get into it.

Edmonton Elks kicker Vincent Blanchard drilled a 57-yard field goal on the final play to beat Saskatchewan 36-34 at Mosaic Stadium on Thursday night, snatching first place in the CFL's West Division. The result pushes the Elks to 6-1, their best start since 2017, while the Roughriders slip to 4-2. Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo had a monster night, throwing for 510 yards and four touchdowns, while Saskatchewan's Trevor Harris answered with three touchdown passes of his own in a first half that saw the Riders take a 21-17 lead into the break.

Saskatchewan led 34-33 in the fourth quarter after a pair of late field goals from Alex Hale, but a 46-yard attempt with three minutes left sailed wide, opening the door for Edmonton's game-winning drive. The two teams meet again in Edmonton on Aug. 1.

Before kickoff, the Roughriders held a pregame ceremony honouring Bhishma Rajyaguru, 22, of Regina and linebacker Jayden Dalke, 30, a member of last year's Grey Cup championship team, both of whom died in a highway collision near Lumsden last week. The circumstances of this fatal collision have been widely discussed and reported on this week and we may never have all of the answers to our questions. Last night was about coming together to honor and remember the two young men who lost their lives.

Two young girls from Alberta became honorary RCMP co-commanding officers for a day this week, capping their visit with a stop at the RCMP's Depot Division in Regina. Maya Ferguson of Spruce Grove and Haley Nedeljak of Edmonton were selected through a partnership between Alberta RCMP and the Kids with Cancer Society, an Edmonton-based charity supporting children and families affected by cancer. After being sworn in and signing a change-of-command parchment, the pair explored specialized RCMP equipment, piloted drones and toured a helicopter hangar before flying to Regina.

At Depot, the girls tried driving simulators, took a lap around the driver training track, got hands-on with a bomb disposal robot and served as guests of honour at a cadet graduation ceremony. Kids with Cancer Society family services coordinator Bailey Karlstrom said battling cancer is incredibly difficult for young people, and that experiences like this help give kids back something the disease often takes away.

The Regina Pats have been busy this week, both on the ice and looking ahead to it. The club signed Finnish defenceman Ossi Tukio to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. The 18-year-old was Regina's first-round pick, 18th overall, in this year's CHL Import Draft, and spent last season captaining Ilves' under-20 squad in Finland, posting 25 points in 34 games. General manager Dale Derkatch pointed to Tukio's strong offensive instincts and knack for jumping into the rush, calling him a player with tremendous upside on the blueline and the power play alike. Tukio rounds out the Pats' 2026 import class, joining forward Samuel Karsay and defenceman Tomas Cermak as the third and final international signing of the off-season.

Meanwhile, forwards Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue were named to Hockey Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team selection camp ahead of next month's Hlinka Gretzky Cup, among just 27 players invited and the only two 2010-born players in the group. Schultz, a Regina product, picked up 29 points in 34 games in his rookie season, while Pue, who joined the Pats from Langley, B.C., collected 16. Both also suited up for Canada at last year's World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Selection camp runs July 27 to Aug. 1 in Edmonton, with Canada opening the tournament against Switzerland on Aug. 3.
