Regina's friendly local roundup · Monday, June 29, 2026

Happy Monday, Regina! 👋

What a weekend. Saturday's storm dumped over 50 millimetres of rain on the city in under an hour, turning the Albert Street underpass into a small lake, and by Sunday afternoon half the city was packed into sports bars watching Canada make World Cup history.

Regina Mops Up After Saturday's Storm Turned Streets Into Rivers

Saturday's storm caught much of the city off guard. Environment Canada logged 52 millimetres of rain falling on Regina, with more than 50 of that total packed into roughly an hour. Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski pointed to a slow-moving system that camped over the city longer than usual, part of a pattern of heavier rainfall the region has seen more often this year.

Several spots around the city took the brunt of it. A car ended up stranded beneath the Albert Street underpass as water rose past the roadway, more vehicles got stuck along First Avenue North near Campbell Street and McCarthy Boulevard, and the grounds around Holy Rosary Cathedral saw standing water of their own. Out on Ring Road, drivers near Argyle Street had to sit tight while water crept toward their doors before it was safe to move again.

The good news: the sun is back, the lawns have never been greener, and the cleanup is mostly done. If you're still finding puddles in your basement window wells this week, you're far from alone. Best to avoid driving through standing water you can't see the bottom of, and give low spots a wide berth until everything clears up.

Regina Erupts as Canada Reaches the World Cup Round of 16

Crowds at local sports bars and pubs spent Sunday afternoon on their feet, and for good reason. Canada and South Africa were still scoreless deep into the second half, but two minutes into stoppage time, Stephen Eustáquio buried a shot from the top of the box to give Canada a 1-0 win, the country's first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory. High-fives and raised glasses erupted across local bars and living rooms celebrating the big win.

The celebration had a Regina art twist too: hip-hop artist and muralist Danny Fernandez, known to most of the city as Def3, painted live in front of Team Canada during the tournament and talked about the experience on CBC's The 306. Canada moves on to the Round of 16 now, so clear your schedule, because Leopold's will be just as loud next time.

Pats Winger Zach Lansard Drafted by the Stanley Cup Champion Hurricanes

Regina Pats fans have another reason to feel good about the future. Forward Zach Lansard was selected 68th overall in the third round of the NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, fresh off their Stanley Cup win. Lansard put up 24 goals and 56 points in 68 games for the Pats last season, a massive jump after being named the team's Rookie of the Year in 2024-25.

NHL Network analyst Jason Bukala summed him up in three words: "tenacious, competitive, fast," exactly the type Carolina tends to draft for. He's also one of the youngest players in his draft class, with plenty of runway still ahead of him. Keep an eye on Carolina's lineup a few years from now. There might be a little Queen City in it.

An 11-Year-Old's Stolen Bike, and the Regina Neighbourhood That Wouldn't Let It Ruin Her Summer

Mila and Atticus McLean were looking forward to a summer of biking together through Rosemont. Those plans hit a snag when eleven-year-old Mila came home one afternoon to find the garage door open and her bike gone, taken during a break-in.

Their mom, Angela, posted about it on a community social media page, mostly hoping someone might spot the bike. Instead, the post took off. Neighbours shared it, offered tips, and one woman, Alana Rayner, asked what colour Mila liked best and showed up at the family's door with a brand new bike within days. Another neighbour repaired the damaged garage and upgraded the family's security.

Way to go Regina :)

City Hall Glows Blue for Deafblind Awareness Month

From June 26 to 28, Regina City Hall lit up blue in recognition of Deafblind Awareness Month, a chance to highlight a community that's often overlooked. Saskatchewan's Ryan Riehl, who lost his sight to a childhood tumour and later lost his hearing as well, spent years as a competitive water-skier before turning to painting, mostly sunsets, the kind he remembers seeing clearly as a kid.

"We're out there," Riehl said of the deafblind community. "You might not see or hear us a lot, but we're out there." A small light on a big building, with a good reminder behind it.
