Three Pats will wear the Maple Leaf in November

The Regina Pats are sending three teenagers to the 2026 U17 World Challenge, running Nov. 1 to 7 at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ont. Hockey Canada named forwards Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue to its rosters, along with prospect Logan Henry, a 15-year-old the Pats took 23rd overall in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft. Schultz and Henry will suit up for Canada White, while Pue joins Canada Red. The Pats' manager of hockey operations, Max Paddock, is making the trip as well, as goaltending coach for Canada White.

For Schultz and Pue, this is a return trip. Both helped Canada White to a silver medal at last year's tournament, then won gold together at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton this August. Pue scored six goals there, a record for a Canadian underage player, and Schultz tied for the scoring lead with 10 points in five games. This time, the linemates land on opposite teams. Pue said wearing the Canada jersey is special every time and isn't something he takes for granted, while Schultz said he hopes one of them brings home gold.

Three Pats, two teams, one goal. Cheer for both.

Bagg, McCallum and Clark join the Plaza of Honour on Saturday

Saturday's Riders game against Montreal comes with a special halftime. Kicker Paul McCallum, receiver Rob Bagg and centre Dan Clark will be inducted into the Roughriders' Plaza of Honour during the 1 p.m. game at Mosaic Stadium. Clark is a Regina product who took the rare path to the CFL through junior football, playing for the Regina Thunder and pulling double duty with both clubs in 2009 and 2010. He stayed with the Riders until 2022 and was part of the 2013 Grey Cup team.

McCallum's numbers hold up against anyone in team history. Across 185 regular-season games in green, he ranks first all-time in punts (1,116) and punting yardage, and second in points (1,615), field goals (368) and converts (408). Bagg went undrafted out of Queen's, then was twice named the team's Most Outstanding Canadian, in 2009 and 2015, and sits sixth in Rider history with 364 catches. Clark had advice for young players across the province: dream bigger than he did and be willing to do the work.

Retro jerseys, three legends and a big game for the playoff push. Get to your seat before halftime.

🎶 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Queen City Distillers reveals its six venues

We finally know what's going inside Queen City Distillers. Brandt Sports and Entertainment owner Shaun Semple released renderings Wednesday of the REAL District complex, which will hold six spaces for live entertainment, food and drinks once construction wraps up next spring. The whole project is expected to cost at least $70 million, with brewing and distilling moving to a separate site in the Avana Centre. Semple said the entertainment venue and distillery will employ more than 200 people.

The centrepiece is The Jack, a two-storey concert hall seating more than 1,500 people, named for blues guitarist Jack Semple, Shaun's relative, who joked that the name has a nice ring to it. It will have private boxes and a recording studio. Bellaterra, an Italian restaurant with a 60-seat patio, will feature food from Saskatchewan producers and aims to make everything from scratch. Rounding it out are The Draft Room sports bar, a speakeasy for local acts called The Last Note, a wine and spirits bar called The Vault and a drive-thru liquor store.

A new stage built for bigger tours. Spring can't come fast enough.

🏛️ HISTORY & CULTURE

Yes, there are tunnels under the Legislative Building

Ever wondered what's under the Saskatchewan Legislative Building? Building manager Steve Bata says there's about a kilometre of tunnels beneath the legislative grounds in Wascana Park. Before you picture anything cinematic, these are utility tunnels. They carry high-pressure steam, cooling, electrical and communication lines from the Powerhouse, a brick building behind the Legislature that dates to 1920 and supplies the precinct's heating and cooling. Crews use the tunnels every day, and Bata says they're inspected at least once a week.

There are actually two generations of tunnels down there. The original network began taking on water, so it was decommissioned and sealed, and a replacement was built in the late 1970s. The old tunnels did come with a little lore. A few houses once stood behind the Legislature for the park superintendent and powerhouse chief, and a former resident wrote about sneaking into the tunnel as a kid. As for the rumoured secret bunker, Bata laughed it off. The tunnels were built to be useful, he says, not mysterious.

No treasure, no bunker, just a kilometre of pipes keeping the dome warm.

🧹 CITY UPDATE

Fall street sweeping is underway in mature neighbourhoods

If your street sits under a big canopy of trees, keep an eye out for signs. The City of Regina's fall street sweeping started Thursday, with crews focusing on neighbourhoods that have mature tree cover, including Cathedral, the Crescents, the General Hospital neighbourhood, Lakeview and North Central. Sweeping runs from 4 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the city expects to wrap up by Oct. 28 as long as the weather co-operates. Residents are asked to watch for posted signs and move vehicles off the street on their scheduled days.

Cars left on the street during a scheduled sweep may be ticketed or towed, and crews won't come back for spots they had to skip around a parked vehicle. The city suggests parking off-street or sharing driveway space with neighbours where you can. For reminders, download the free Sweep and Plow app or sign up for phone and email notifications through the city's website. Sweeping can kick up dust, so keep windows closed while crews are nearby and slow down to give the sweepers room to work.

Move the car, skip the ticket.
