Happy Monday, Regina! 👋

Welcome to June. The calendar flipped over the weekend with near-perfect weather across the province, and after the heat wave that had much of Saskatchewan pushing into the 30s last week, the first day of summer's unofficial start feels well-earned. June arrives with longer evenings, baseball at Currie Field, the Riders wrapping up camp, and a packed schedule of arts and community ahead. There is a lot to get excited about this week.

Regina's Darbi Edwards Wins the Saskatchewan Marathon in a Record-Breaking Field

Yesterday's Saskatchewan Marathon in Saskatoon was one for the history books. Regina's Darbi Edwards crossed the finish line first in the women's full marathon with a time of 3:07:00, earning gold out of 109 entries in her category. The race drew a record-breaking field of more than 6,700 runners and walkers signed up across the 5K, 10K, half-marathon and full marathon distances.

Edwards, a former U Sports track and cross-country standout, has been steadily building into one of Saskatchewan's top distance runners, and Sunday's gold made that impossible to ignore. It is the kind of homegrown athletic achievement that deserves a proper Queen City celebration. Well run, Darbi.

🏈 RIDERS

Grey Cup Champs Finalized: 29 of 45 Riders Return as Season Opener Approaches

Training camp is over, the roster cuts are in, and the defending Saskatchewan Roughriders are ready to go. The Roughriders finalized their 2026 season-opening roster on Saturday, adding 13 players to the practice roster while releasing 19 others. All four quarterbacks remain on the active roster, with starter Trevor Harris joined by Jack Coan, Brayden Schager and short-yardage option Tommy Stevens.

With those transactions, the team's roster includes 29 of the 45 players who dressed for the Roughriders in last year's Grey Cup championship win over the Montreal Alouettes. There is real continuity at the core, which is exactly what you want from a defending champion. One local storyline worth following: University of Regina Rams DB Carson Sombach was returned to school, keeping his rights with the club for a future season. The Riders are on a bye in Week 1 before returning to practice June 9, ahead of the season opener on June 13 against the visiting B.C. Lions. Mark it in the calendar.

💳 CITY & TOURISM

Tourism Regina Launches a New Promo Card to Keep Visitor Dollars Local

Tourism Regina has launched a new promo card program designed to encourage conference and event visitors to explore the city and spend locally. The card works like a prepaid credit card, loaded with a predetermined amount that visitors can use at participating Regina businesses.

The promo cards were launched at an event at the Everyday Kitchen on May 29. Mayor Chad Bachynski called the initiative "an invitation to dive into the incredible experiences that make our city unforgettable." The cards are being distributed through hotel partners like Hotel Saskatchewan, where guests who extend their stays beyond conference nights receive one as a perk. It is a smart way to get visitor spending into local restaurants, shops, and attractions rather than letting it evaporate at the airport. If your business wants in, you can add it to the program.

🎵 ARTS & EDUCATION

Three U of R Students Represent Saskatchewan at Canada's Premier Youth Music Festival

Three University of Regina students were selected through a highly competitive national audition process to perform at MusicFest Canada: Ari Wang and Ralph Reyes, both in their fourth year of the Bachelor of Music Education program, and Addisen Nelson, a second-year Bachelor of Music student. Wang and Nelson performed with the 2026 Jack Long National Honour Band, while Reyes sang tenor with the Ellison Canadian Honour Choir.

These are exactly the kinds of stories worth celebrating, three students from the Queen City competing and performing at the highest level of youth music in Canada. The Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance at the U of R continues to send talent that holds its own nationally.

Defending WCBL Champs Return to an Upgraded Currie Field for Home Opener Weekend

The Regina Red Sox are your defending Western Canadian Baseball League champions, and summer baseball is back at Currie Field under new ownership. The Red Sox are under new ownership in 2026, with Brandt Sports and Entertainment taking the reins. Currie Field now features a digital outfield sign for replays and in-game prompts, new seating and rails on fan decks, and expanded food and drink options including a Cocktail Caravan by Queen City Distillers and an El Tropezon food truck.

"There's still a youth ticket for $5," said general manager Gary Brotzel. "With the video board, there'll be a lot more fan interaction with the games. It should be awesome." Tuesday June 2 is a home game, and this is the kind of warm-evening outing that makes summer in Regina what it is. Tickets and the full schedule are at reginaredsox.com.
