☀️ WEATHER

Summer Hit All at Once: The First Heat Wave of 2026 Is Here

After a May that stubbornly refused to feel like May, Saskatchewan has skipped straight into summer. Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Regina starting Monday, with daytime highs forecast to stay above 30°C for most of the week, peaking around 36°C on Thursday before pulling back slightly going into the weekend. Overnight lows are sticking in the high teens, meaning there's not much relief once the sun goes down. Temperatures are running as much as 15°C above normal for this time of year.

On the bright side, farmers who spent the long weekend battling cold, waterlogged fields should finally see conditions improve, and anyone who planted a garden recently is in luck. If you're working outside, stay ahead of it: plenty of water, breaks in the shade, and light clothing. Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion can call HealthLine at 811. For the rest of us, Wascana Lake is calling.

🏈 RIDERS

Riders Beat the Bombers 31-27 to Close Pre-Season in Saskatoon

The Saskatchewan Roughriders gave Saskatoon its first CFL game in 35 years on Saturday night at Griffiths Stadium, and they made it a memorable one. Down 17-7 after the first quarter against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Riders mounted a steady comeback, with quarterback Brayden Schager leading the charge despite playing through a swollen eye. The decisive moment came with 42 seconds left: a three-yard touchdown grab from Daniel Wiebe, a former University of Saskatchewan Huskie, capped a 99-yard drive and put Saskatchewan ahead for good at 31-27. Schager finished with 14 completions on 19 attempts for 179 yards.

Linebacker Vi Jones sealed the victory with an interception in the closing seconds, his first in professional football. "It was the first interception of my professional career," Jones said after Monday's practice at Mosaic Stadium. "I've had a lot in practice, but not in a game setting. It was a great feeling, being in the right spot at the right time." The Riders finish the pre-season 1-1 before the regular season opener on June 13. If Saturday is any preview of what this team is bringing into 2026, Rider fans have a lot to look forward to.

Queen City Pride Parade Has a New Route for June 13

This year's Queen City Pride Parade will follow a new path through the city on June 13, confirmed by the City of Regina, Regina Police Service, and the Provincial Capital Commission. The updated route starts near the Conexus Arts Centre at 23rd Avenue and Wascana Parkway, heads north along Albert Street, passes the Legislative Building on Legislative Drive, and follows the lakeshore before wrapping up just past Hill Boulevard. The change was motivated by public safety considerations following a province-wide review of parade routes in the spring.

Queen City Pride shared some bittersweet feelings on social media, acknowledging the significance of past routes to the community's history, including the Albert Street Bridge where Regina's first Pride march took place. RPS Inspector Chris Jackiw noted the new route was agreed to by Queen City Pride and designed to reduce traffic cross-points and improve emergency vehicle access throughout the event. Pride 2026 runs June 5 to 13, with the parade as the final celebration.

Saskatchewan Tourism Week Reminds Us What Makes This Place Worth Celebrating

May 25 to 29 is Saskatchewan Tourism Week, and the timing feels right. According to Tourism Saskatchewan, the industry generates $3 billion in annual spending across the province and supports more than 61,000 Saskatchewan residents working in tourism during peak season. For Regina, that means every visit to a local cafe, live music venue, farmers' market, gallery, or community event is part of something bigger than it might look on the surface.

This week is a good reminder that the Queen City has more going on than it sometimes gets credit for. The Farmers' Market is back in full swing at Victoria Park. Darke Hall is announcing a new season soon. TEDxRegina is taking over the city on Friday. Wascana Centre is at its absolute best right now. Tourism Week is not just about attracting visitors from out of province. It's about being a tourist in your own city. There's always something here worth discovering.

🎨 ARTS & CULTURE

A Wildfire Couple Turned Melted Art Into Something Remarkable at the Legislative Building

When the Wolf Wildfire tore through the community of Denare Beach in northern Saskatchewan last summer, it reduced many homes to ash, including one couple's full collection of pottery, paintings, and sculptures. The intense heat fused and transformed those pieces into entirely new forms. Rather than mourn the loss, the couple gathered what remained and built an exhibition out of it. That exhibit opened this week at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina, displaying the melted and reshaped works the flames left behind.

It is a powerful piece of community storytelling, and the Legislative Building makes for a meaningful and accessible home for the work. If you're in the Wascana area this week, it's worth stepping inside. The exhibit is free to visit and open to the public.

🏚️ COMMUNITY

Regina's German Club Has Been Part of This City Since 1955. Now It Needs Us.

The German Club at 1727 St. John Street is one of those spots that holds more history than most people realize. The club was established in 1955 in what was then known as Germantown, a neighbourhood shaped by European immigrant families who arrived here and built something from nothing. Seventy years later, the building they left behind is in trouble. The original 1968 roof has reached the end of its life, and the estimates to replace it are landing between $200,000 and $240,000. A temporary patch would cost roughly half that but only buys time.

The ways to pitch in are simple. Becoming a member is $20 and that money goes straight to keeping the building operational. The Biergarten patio reopens on June 6, and the club's Summer Solstice celebration is set for June 20. Both are good reasons to show up, enjoy yourself, and support a piece of Regina that deserves to keep going. Plenty of people in this city have some connection to the German Club, even if they haven't thought about it in years. This would be a good week to think about it again.
