Queen City Digest

Regina's friendly local roundup | Friday, April 24, 2026

Happy Friday, Regina! 👋

Spring is doing that very Saskatchewan thing where it refuses to commit. A powerful system pushed through the province Wednesday into Thursday, bringing wind gusts up to 100 km/h and heavy snow to parts of southern Saskatchewan, and some of that messy energy is still lingering this morning. The good news: the weekend is looking up, and there is an absolute stacked lineup of things to do in the Queen City over the next three days.

We have two Regina women being honoured for decades of remarkable community service, a local quarterback getting the chance of a lifetime with the Grey Cup champs, and one more reason to feel good about living here year-round. Plus, Three Days Grace is coming to town tomorrow night. Let's get into it.

In today's edition:

🌨️ WEATHER UPDATE

Spring Storm Brings Wind and Snow to Regina, Roads Still Affected This Morning

Another spring system made its presence felt across southern Saskatchewan this week, with wind gusts of 90 to 100 kilometres per hour pushing through the region Wednesday through Thursday, affecting the cities of Regina and Moose Jaw and communities across 123 rural municipalities. Local utility outages are possible, and Environment Canada warned that water could pool on roads and in low-lying areas.

The latest snowstorm began impacting highway travel across Saskatchewan Thursday morning, with travel not recommended on a number of routes in the northwest and other highways listed as covered. Conditions are improving today, but give yourself extra time and check Highway Hotline before heading out of the city. The season is turning. Warmer, more settled weather is on the way.

🏅 COMMUNITY

Two Regina Women Honoured With Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal at Government House

National Volunteer Week brought a meaningful ceremony to Government House this week, and two Regina women were front and centre. Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre recognized 14 individuals from across Saskatchewan for their acts of volunteerism, with Karen Howard and Dr. Renatta Varma of Regina both receiving the 2025 Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal.

Karen Howard has dedicated decades of volunteer service to developing figure skating in Saskatchewan and across Canada, and just recently returned from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, Italy. Dr. Renatta Varma, a longtime CNIB board member and former Chair, led the Guide Dogs with Purpose Gala, raising more than $600,000 to fund six guide dogs and support tens of thousands of people with vision loss. Her volunteer contributions also extend to the Regina International Film Festival, Cultural Connections Regina, and the RCMP Heritage Centre. These are two extraordinary women who have given so much to this community for so long. Congratulations to both.

🏈 RIDERS

Local U of S Huskies QB Gets His Shot at Riderville With Roughriders QB Internship

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are adding a local arm to their quarterback room this spring, welcoming Jake Farrell to training camp as part of the Canadian Football League's QB Internship program. Farrell, a Saskatoon product who played for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, will work alongside the Grey Cup champion Roughriders in the lead-up to the 2026 season.

Farrell appeared in seven games for the Huskies in 2025, throwing for 647 yards with a 61.1 per cent completion rate and eight touchdown passes, and took the reins as the starter in the 60th Vanier Cup, adding big-game experience to his resume. The CFL preseason is set to begin May 18, with the regular season kicking off June 4. For a local kid to get this kind of access to the defending champions at the start of a title defence season, that is a story worth watching closely.

🌿 HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

Good News for Allergy Sufferers: Regina Is One of Canada's Best Cities to Be

If the spring sneezes have been hitting you hard this week, there is actually a silver lining: you could be living somewhere far worse. Regina was ranked the third-best city in Canada to live in for those with pollen sensitivities, with researchers citing the relatively low number of days with significant airborne pollen levels. St. John's, NL took the top spot, followed by Saint John, NB, with Regina placing third and Moncton fourth.

Researchers note that temperatures, vegetation patterns, and coastal conditions affect how prolonged and intense the pollen season is in a given region. On the other side of the coin, Windsor, Ontario ranked as the worst city in Canada for seasonal allergy sufferers. So while the snow and wind this week have been no fun, Regina really does have some built-in advantages for anyone who dreads allergy season. One more reason to love the Queen City. :)
