Happy Friday, Regina! 👋

We've got a proper stretch of late-summer warmth ahead: sunny and 29°C both today and tomorrow, before things cool off and turn showery for Sunday. Sunday's also the biggest football day of the year in the Queen City.

There's a lot to feel good about this week too: a new community development broke ground, a local fundraiser smashed expectations, and the Pats picked up another pre-season win. Let's get into it.

In today's edition:

Métis Nation–Saskatchewan broke ground this week on a three-acre development in Regina's Westera neighbourhood that will include a 90-space early learning and child-care centre, a service hub and a 16-suite supportive housing unit. The child-care centre's design draws on Red River and Hudson Bay frame-style homes, with interiors that reference traditional Métis beading, and the housing project is being built in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Minister of early learning and child care Ryan Carriere said the goal is for children to grow up immersed in their culture from a young age. The service hub will also connect citizens with support workers for programming and general information, and applications for the housing unit open to Métis citizens next year.

The Regina Pats improved to 2-0 in the 2026 pre-season on Wednesday night, defeating the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2 in overtime at the Brandt Centre. Ellis Mieyette scored twice on the power play to give Regina an early lead, and Moose Jaw tied it with a goal in each of the final two periods before Matt Paranych ended it just 34 seconds into overtime.

Mieyette finished with two goals and an assist, while Paranych collected two points on the night, and the Pats outshot the Warriors 39-21. Regina continues its exhibition schedule on the road this weekend, in Brandon on Friday and Saturday, before returning home to open the regular season against the Swift Current Broncos on Sunday, September 27.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers stirred up some cross-prairie rivalry this week, posting again that Regina-style pizza is "trash" ahead of Sunday's Labour Day Classic. It's the same jab the Bombers' social media team made three years ago, and this time they doubled down with another post on Tuesday.

Roughriders head coach Corey Mace and quarterback Trevor Harris weighed in on the rivalry during an appearance on CBC's The 306, taking the ribbing in stride ahead of the big game. Regina-style pizza might raise eyebrows from out-of-towners, but around here it's a point of local pride, especially with bragging rights on the line this weekend.

Walk the Walk 2026, a community-led fundraiser supporting 2SLGBTQ+ youth, raised more than $86,000 for Lulu's Lodge, the John Howard Society of Saskatchewan reported this week. Six local leaders, including Regina Fire Services' Bobby McStay and the Globe Theatre's Heather Ervin, took the stage in drag at the Casino Regina Show Lounge, working with local drag mentors to build their routines from scratch.

Ervin took home the crown after a judged sing-off to Cher's "I Believe" against fellow performers Tyler Polowy and McStay. This was the fourth Walk the Walk event, and the first organized entirely by community volunteers, with every dollar going directly to Lulu's Lodge.

Regina is set to receive as much as $24 million in federal transit funding over the next 10 years through the Canada Public Transit Fund. The agreement would provide roughly $2.4 million annually toward capital transit investments including new buses, shelters, bikeways, maintenance facilities and sidewalks, with the city required to contribute at least $3.6 million of its own money each year to unlock the full amount.

The city began purchasing diesel-hybrid buses in 2025 to help manage costs, though the funding agreement will require any buses bought after March 2029 to be zero-emission. The proposed agreement still needs council approval, but it's a solid down payment on keeping Regina's buses, shelters and sidewalks in good shape for the next decade.
