Riders stay west after beating the Elks

The Riders wrapped up the regular season with a 16-9 win over the Edmonton Elks at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday, and the result keeps them in the West for the playoffs. Both teams rested plenty of starters, and backup quarterback Jack Coan took good care of the ball in wind strong enough to wreck the kicking game. The defence carried the day, forcing four turnovers and piling up six sacks, with six different Riders getting home. Saskatchewan finishes 10-8, good for third in the West.

Short-yardage specialist Tommy Stevens also made some history. His two rushing touchdowns gave him 17 on the season, breaking the CFL single-season record of 16 set by Caleb Evans in 2022 and topping the franchise mark of 16 George Reed set in 1968. Next up is a West semifinal against the B.C. Lions at B.C. Place in Vancouver on Halloween night. The Lions won both games in Vancouver this year, while the Riders took the only meeting in Regina, 31-27. The winner heads to Edmonton for the West final on Nov. 7.

One more road trip west. Wear green to the costume party.

The Thunder are Canadian Bowl bound

The Regina Thunder are one win away from a national title. The Prairie Football Conference champions jumped out to a 30-0 halftime lead over the Sault College Cougars and rolled to a 44-15 win in the CJFL national semifinal in Sault Ste. Marie. Peter Boersch did the heavy lifting on the ground with 212 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. Quarterback Jayden Zelionka threw for 192 yards and broke off a 31-yard touchdown run, Tanner Donovel caught five passes for 111 yards, including a 46-yard score, and Harry Case kicked field goals from 42 and 45 yards.

It's been quite a season. Regina went 7-1 in the regular season, then beat the Calgary Colts 40-10 and knocked off the defending national champion Saskatoon Hilltops 44-19 in the PFC final. Next up is the B.C. champion Westshore Rebels in the Canadian Bowl on Sunday, Nov. 8, in B.C. The Thunder's lone national title came in 2013 with a 55-26 win over the Vancouver Island Raiders, and they came up just short in the 2022 final, losing 21-19 to the Okanagan Sun.

Thirteen years is long enough. Go get it.

Pue's hat trick keeps the Pats perfect at home

Moose Jaw led 2-1 early in the second period on Friday. Then the Pats took over. Regina scored six times in the middle frame, five of them in the final 8:28, on the way to a 6-2 win over the Warriors at the Brandt Centre. Rookie Liam Pue led the charge with his second hat trick of the season and a career-high four points. Zach Moore and Zachary Lansard also scored, and Regina outshot Moose Jaw 20-6 in the second period and 33-21 overall.

Pue now has 11 goals and 18 points, which has him tied for third in WHL scoring. The win was the Pats' fifth straight on home ice this season, and their home penalty kill stayed perfect at 21-for-21 after shutting down all three Moose Jaw power plays. The Everett Silvertips are next to visit the Brandt Centre, on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Five for five at home. Let's make it six on Tuesday.

🎓 EDUCATION

FNUniv rolls out $450,000 in placement bursaries

Students at First Nations University of Canada who take on unpaid placements can now get help with the cost. FNUniv has announced 250 bursaries worth $1,800 each, a potential $450,000 in total, for students who have finished or plan to finish unpaid work-integrated learning, from practicums and field placements to culture camps. The program is delivered through Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada, with funding coming in part from the federal Innovative Work-Integrated Learning Initiative and CEWIL Canada's iHUB.

The goal is to stop students from having to pick between hands-on experience and covering their costs while in school. At FNUniv, that experience can happen in a workplace, a classroom or out on the land. President Jacqueline Ottmann said these opportunities let students put their knowledge to work, gain practical experience and build relationships that will carry them past graduation. Students can ask about eligibility at the FNUniv Career Centre, [email protected], or book a one-on-one appointment through the centre's website.

Real-world experience shouldn't come at the cost of rent.

♻️ CITY UPDATE

Recycling and compost funding is still up for grabs

Condo boards, landlords and business owners, this one's for you. More than $500,000 is still available through the City of Regina's Early Adopter Incentive Program, which reimburses eligible costs like recycling and compost bins, signage and bathroom hand dryers. Funding is first come, first served, and the City expects it to run out before every eligible property applies. Willow Iorga, the City's co-ordinator of education and outreach, said about half of the money has already been handed out, with roughly 1,200 multi-family and 3,000 industrial, commercial and institutional properties that could qualify.

The deadlines are coming. Multi-family properties need compost service by July 1, 2027, and businesses need recycling plus food and yard waste collection by Jan. 1, 2028. A capital-only option covers 100 per cent of the first $10,000 in eligible costs and half of anything beyond that, up to $20,000. A combined option gives multi-family properties $25 per unit for kitchen catchers and liner bags plus a green-cart rebate of up to $55 a month, while businesses can get up to $2,500 for equipment and a $105 monthly rebate. City staff will even visit to show tenants or staff how to sort.

Money on the table, with a clock on it.
