Happy Monday, Regina! 👋

The rain held off for the weekend's biggest events, and the week ahead looks warm and mostly dry too, with highs near 23°C today, 25°C Tuesday and 23°C Wednesday, though a better chance of showers moves in Tuesday and Wednesday. It was a big few days for local sport and a quieter, more reflective moment for Regina's arts scene, so there is plenty to get into this morning.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders throttled the Ottawa Redblacks 42-20 Friday night at Mosaic Stadium, piling up 535 yards of net offence, their best regulation-time total in 16 years, in front of nearly 30,000 fans. Tommy Stevens scored three rushing touchdowns for the second straight game, all in the fourth quarter, while KeeSean Johnson hauled in a career-high 11 catches for 133 yards and a score. The win pushed Saskatchewan to 6-2 and into sole possession of first place in the West Division.

The bigger milestone belonged to quarterback Trevor Harris, who became just the 12th player in Canadian football history to reach 40,000 career passing yards, finishing the night with 401 yards through the air. Head coach Corey Mace surprised Harris with the game ball afterward, though Harris tried to hand it off to a teammate, true to form. The Riders hit the road next, with games in Hamilton and B.C. before returning home August 29.

Regina Pats forwards Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue each scored twice as Canada thumped the United States 8-1 on Saturday to capture gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton. Brock England also had a two-goal game, and Canada's power play converted three of five chances in the lopsided win over their long-time rivals. The tournament is one of the top proving grounds for the next wave of NHL draft-eligible talent, and a strong showing there often turns heads heading into the junior season.

For Pats fans, the result is a nice preview of the talent set to lace up in Regina this fall. Both players are heading into the WHL season fresh off a gold medal in one of the sport's premier showcases for players their age, against the same American rivals Canada has faced at the tournament for years. It's an early highlight in what fans are hoping is a big season ahead at the Brandt Centre.

More than 800 young athletes from across the country descended on Regina's Canada Games Complex this weekend for the 48th annual Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships, the only national track and field competition in the country for the under-16 and under-18 age groups. Saskatchewan's lieutenant governor, Bernadette McIntyre, fired the starting pistol to open competition Friday, with events running through Sunday. This year's championship carried extra weight as the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, which has run the event since 1926.

The Legion Nationals grew out of the organization's long-standing support for youth sport among Veterans' families, and plenty of alumni have gone on to compete at the Commonwealth, Pan Am and even Olympic level. Local sponsors including the City of Regina, the Regina Hotels Association and PIB Insurance Brokers helped bring the championship to the Queen City. It's a quiet reminder of how much national-calibre sport passes through Regina every summer, even when the Riders and Pats are grabbing the headlines.

The Co-operators Centre spent four days as home to some of the country's top ringette talent, as the 2026 Canada Games Challenge Cup and La Relève, Canada's U17 National Team Development Program, wrapped up Sunday. Nine provincial teams played 23 games over the tournament, with athletes using the event to prepare for the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Quebec City. "We're excited to bring this national event to Regina," said Ringette Canada's director of sport, Shelley Coolidge, ahead of the weekend.

The tournament wasn't just for elite prospects. Regina Ringette hosted a free Come Try Ringette session on Saturday, giving locals a chance to test out a sport that combines skating speed with a straight stick and a rubber ring instead of a puck. With the Regina Hotels Association helping bring the event to the city, it's the kind of national showcase that quietly passes through the Co-operators Centre most summers without much fanfare.

Saskatchewan's literary community is remembering Ken Mitchell, the celebrated poet, novelist and playwright, who died August 5 at age 85. Mitchell taught creative writing in the University of Regina's English department for nearly four decades and helped found the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild, laying groundwork for the province's literary scene as it exists today. His stage play Heroes was produced more than 50 times around the world, and his prairie-rooted writing earned him a place in the Order of Canada and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

Fellow artist Bill Ursel, whose wife worked alongside Mitchell in the English department, said his writing captured "urban and rural connections between readers" across the province, with a gift for turning intimate moments into some of the funniest lines in his poetry. Regina's arts community, much of which Mitchell had a hand in building, is taking a moment this week to remember a writer who spent decades making the Prairies worth reading about.
