A Classic Saskatchewan Spring Storm Hit Overnight - Here Is Where Things Stand

A powerful low-pressure system swept through Regina Thursday night and into Friday morning, bringing sustained winds of 70 km/h and gusts peaking between 90 and 100 km/h. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement warning of potential infrastructure damage and localized utility outages, with rainfall in the range of 5 to 10 mm for the Regina area. High-profile vehicles - trucks, trailers, anything with a big profile, are facing the trickiest conditions, particularly on north-south routes where the wind hits hardest.

The practical advice heading into the long weekend: check conditions before you head out this morning, secure anything in your yard that could catch air, and give yourself extra time if you are driving to any of today's events. The rain is welcome news for a prairie landscape that has been dry, and forecasts suggest conditions will ease through the day. By the time the Massed Pipes and Drums strike up at Victoria Park this afternoon, the Queen City should be in much better shape. Wishing everyone a safe and dry start to the long weekend :)

The Saskatchewan Highland Gathering Is Back at Victoria Park This Long Weekend

Source : saskhighland.ca

The Saskatchewan Highland Gathering and Celtic Festival has been a May long weekend tradition in Regina for decades, incorporating older Highland Games events that have been running since the early 20th century, with pipers, drummers, dancers, heavy events athletes, and enthusiasts from Western Canada gathering each year. This year the gates open today at Victoria Park with festivities running through Victoria Day Monday. Saturday brings the main athletic competition day at the park, with the Queen City Open Championship for highland dance moving to the Hotel Saskatchewan Regency Ballroom, and a full day of pipe band and solo events on the schedule.

Tonight wraps up with the Massed Pipes and Drums at 5:00 PM in Victoria Park, a spine-tingling moment you do not need to be Scottish to appreciate, followed by a ceilidh at The Exchange at 7:30 PM. Kids under 12 get in free all weekend, making this one of the best family outings of the long weekend. Adult admission is paid, with youth aged 12 to 17 and seniors 65 and older at $10 for the outdoor grounds. Tickets and full schedule at saskhighland.ca

Munch Café: A Regina Restaurant Where Ability Comes First

Munch Café and Catering looks like any other restaurant, but behind the counter is a team of people with disabilities building skills, confidence, and careers in a supportive workplace. The café's is a nonprofit that exists to provide employment and training for people with cognitive disabilities.

The food that Munch produces and the service it provides is as good as any restaurant in the city with no qualifier attached. The goal is always preparing people for life: employees build skills at Munch and then move into jobs in the broader community, with the café helping them find their next opportunity. Now operating inside The Nest Health Centre, Munch serves fresh, made-from-scratch meals, soups, sandwiches, and specialty coffees daily. If you have not been in yet, make it your next lunch stop. This is a great local business with a strong mission worth supporting.

Riders Are in Saskatoon and the Preseason Clock Is Ticking

The Saskatchewan Roughriders officially opened main training camp in Saskatoon, and the energy around Griffiths Stadium reflected a team eager to build off last season's title run. Head coach Corey Mace described the atmosphere as one of the highlights of the year as veterans and rookies hit the field together. The defending Grey Cup champions are deep into camp now, with roster battles underway at every position as the preseason approaches.

The Riders play their first preseason game Monday, May 18 in Calgary against the Stampeders, then return for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Griffiths Stadium on May 23, the first CFL action in Saskatoon since 1991. The regular season opens June 13 against the B.C. Lions at Mosaic Stadium, with the home opener doubling as the championship celebration. Circle June 13 on your calendar right now if you have not already.

This Week, We Say Thank You to the People Who Support 6,000 Saskatchewanians

May 10 to 16 is Disability Service Professionals Week. The Ministry of Social Services partners with nearly 100 community-based organizations in more than 90 communities to deliver person-centred services tailored to individual needs. Disability service professionals provide essential day-to-day assistance that helps individuals with intellectual disabilities live, work, and more fully participate in their communities, from personal care to skill development and supported employment.

The work these professionals do tends to happen quietly and without the recognition it deserves. If you know someone in this field, this is the week to say thank you out loud.
