The City of Regina is renaming Armour Road to LaFayette Road, honouring a family whose relatives were among Saskatchewan's first Black settlers. The change was revealed July 31 during a LaFayette family reunion held just outside the city, with more than 100 relatives in attendance. Lewis and Lillie LaFayette arrived in Regina from Iowa in 1906, and their descendants have lived and worked in the city for more than a century.

Carol LaFayette-Boyd, whose grandfather settled a few miles north of the soon-to-be-renamed road, said the family had originally applied to name a street after one of her brothers before deciding the whole family's contributions deserved recognition. LaFayette-Boyd is a longtime Regina resident, a member of the Regina Sports Hall of Fame, and executive director of the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum. Since Armour Road runs through largely undeveloped land in the city's northwest, the signage swap should be a simple one.

Cathedral has been ranked the third neighbourhood in Saskatchewan that best represents the province's character, according to a new survey from the Justin Havre Real Estate Team. The survey drew more than 3,000 responses asking Canadians to name the neighbourhood in their province or state that most captures its everyday culture and sense of place.

The report singled out Cathedral's early 20th-century homes, porches, mature trees and walkable streets close to downtown and Wascana Creek, describing it as a blend of Prairie practicality with a strong local arts presence. Moose Jaw's Avenues took the top provincial spot, followed by Saskatoon's Nutana, with Indian Head and Wolseley rounding out the top five. It's a nice bit of validation for one of Regina's most walkable, most-loved pockets of the city.

Registration for the City of Regina's Fall 2026 Leisure Guide opened Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. for verified residents, with more than 1,500 arts, wellness, adapted and recreation programs on offer. Non-residents and non-verified residents can register starting August 18.

New offerings this fall include "Learn to Lift," a two-hour strength and conditioning class at the Fieldhouse weight room, and an early-morning "Rise & Grind" drop-in. Residents who verify their address get earlier registration access and lower fees, and verification can be done with photo ID at any City of Regina leisure facility.

Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Tommy Stevens is on pace to break the franchise's single-season record for rushing touchdowns, with 11 through just eight games this year. He's already tied Kent Austin for second on the all-time list and needs just one more to move into a share of seventh. The record of 18, set by Ken Carpenter in 1955, is now within reach.

Stevens' rushing has become a signature part of Saskatchewan's 6-2 start, and he's added his own flair to it, borrowing a beer-can-crushing celebration from WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin after his third touchdown run last week. The Riders, who boast the league's stingiest defence at 26.9 points allowed per game, are back in action Saturday in Hamilton before returning home August 29 against Toronto.

Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan has distributed nearly $1.7 million in charitable gaming grants for the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year, with more than $164,000 going to groups in Regina. The quarterly grants, paid to about 1,000 charitable and non-profit organizations across roughly 260 communities, support everything from arts and culture to sport, hospital foundations and service clubs.

Saskatoon groups received just over $139,000 this round, meaning Regina saw the highest concentration of funding in the province this quarter. Minister Responsible for Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan Jeremy Harrison said the program continues to support the charitable spirit of communities in all corners of the province. The grants are calculated automatically from a charity's licensed gaming activity, like bingos and raffles, with no separate application required.
