🌿 Floating Gardens Arrive in Regina's Stormwater Ponds, Built by Local Students

The City of Regina has begun installing six floating treatment wetland islands across the Lakewood, Lakeridge and Rochdale stormwater retention ponds, and students rolled up their sleeves to help. Grade 10 students from Campbell Collegiate joined city crews at the Rochdale pond near the Northwest Leisure Centre, planting native grasses and wetland species into platforms that float on the surface and grow long roots beneath the water.

The idea is simple and clever. The plants soak up excess nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, which reduces the algae blooms that turn ponds green and murky in summer. Cleaner ponds mean cleaner water flowing downstream into Wascana Creek, plus fresh habitat for birds, insects and pollinators. The project is a partnership with the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds and WUQWATR, supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada. A hands-on win for the environment and for the next generation of stewards.

🎨 City Names Five Indigenous Artists for Milestone Residency Year

The City of Regina has selected five Indigenous artists for its 2026 Indigenous Artist in Residence program, marking the fifth anniversary of an initiative that has become a cornerstone of the city's cultural calendar. This year's cohort is Melanie Monique Rose, Lorne Kequatooway, Torrie Ironstar, Brianna LaPlante and Phyllis Poitras-Jarrett, each chosen through an open call and review process.

Working under the residency theme of belonging, kinship and continuity, the artists will create new works for the City's Civic Art Collection and lead public workshops at the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre from August through October. Their work culminates in a group exhibition at the Art Gallery of Regina opening in late November. It is a meaningful way to support local Indigenous artists and to give residents a direct window into Indigenous art and storytelling.

🏈 Riders Lock In Their Roster as Banner Day Approaches

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have finalized their roster for the 2026 season, and Rider Nation will recognize plenty of familiar faces. Twenty-nine of the 45 players who dressed for last year's 112th Grey Cup win over Montreal are back, with Trevor Harris returning as the starting quarterback after earning Grey Cup MVP honours. One fresh name to watch is 23-year-old rookie Brayden Schager out of the University of Hawaii, described by head coach Corey Mace as a competitive firecracker with a live arm.

The wait for kickoff is almost over. The Green and White are on a bye in Week 1, then open the home schedule on Saturday, June 13 at 5:00 PM against the B.C. Lions, when the 2025 Grey Cup championship banner will be unveiled at Mosaic Stadium. If you have been meaning to grab tickets, now is the week to do it before the banner-raising crowd snaps them up.

🌳 June is Parks and Recreation Month, and Plenty of It is Free

The City of Regina has declared June Parks and Recreation Month, and it is backing that up with free activities all month long. Expect everything from park-based programming and fitness classes to community art sessions, all designed to get residents outside and active as the weather warms up. It is a low-cost, no-excuses nudge to try something new in your own neighbourhood.

First up this week is a drop-in community art session in the City Hall Courtyard on Wednesday, June 3 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Pick a stencil, grab some paint, and make something to take home. All ages are welcome and no experience is needed. The full schedule of free June programming is posted online, so it is worth a scroll to plan the rest of your month.

⚾ Defending Champion Red Sox Open Hot and Host a Big Home Week

Queen City baseball is back, and the defending Western Canadian Baseball League champions are picking up right where they left off. The Regina Red Sox took three of their first four games to open the 2026 season, and the team says it could not have asked for a much better start to its title defence. The squad is under new ownership this year, with a refreshed Currie Field featuring a new video board, upgraded fan decks, and added food and drink options including a cocktail caravan and food trucks.

There is no better time to catch a game under the summer sky. The Red Sox host the Medicine Hat Mavericks at Currie Field on Thursday, June 4 at 7:00 PM, then return home to face the Swift Current 57's on Sunday, June 7 at 2:00 PM. With youth tickets still just five dollars, it remains one of the best-value nights out in the city.
