Wear something warm under the costume.
Today we've got a playoff preview, 10 years since the last game at Taylor Field, Regina's next city manager, a big milestone for a new care home and a bird book with deep Regina roots. Let's get into it.

Riders head west for Saturday's semifinal
The Riders wrapped their last full practice of the week on Thursday and are flying to Vancouver for Saturday's West Division Semifinal against the B.C. Lions. Kickoff at B.C. Place is 2:30 p.m., and the Rider Broadcast Network's pregame show starts at 11:30 a.m. Head coach Corey Mace called it a great week of practice and said the team likes where it's at, adding that the attention to detail in all three phases has been nice to watch. There's still plenty of mental prep to do before kickoff, he said, but the physical work is just about done.
Experience is the theme heading in. Offensive coordinator Marc Mueller pointed to players who have been there before, like Sam Emilus, who had his best game last year in the final game, and Trevor Harris, who has started playoff games at home, on the road and in Grey Cups. Mace said the lessons from the 2024 West Final against Winnipeg carried into last year's run. West Division All-CFL offensive lineman Jermarcus Hardrick said he's excited and knows his teammates have his back. A win would put the Riders on a plane to Edmonton next week.
Green on, volume up.
🏟️ RIDER HISTORY
Ten years since the last game at Taylor Field
Thursday marked 10 years since the Riders played their final game at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field. More than 33,000 fans filled the stands on Oct. 29, 2016, and even a rain-soaked 24-6 loss to the B.C. Lions couldn't dampen what followed: a long postgame ceremony honouring some of the franchise's biggest moments. The stadium became the Riders' home in 1936 and was named for local player and coach Neil "Piffles" Taylor in 1947. It hosted three Grey Cups, including the 101st in 2013, when Saskatchewan beat Hamilton 45-23 for the only championship the Riders have won on home turf.
Pieces of the old place are still scattered across the province. Fans who won the wooden bleachers at auctions in 2017 now have them in backyards, basements and on front porches. Northeast of Saskatoon, the Bruno Golf and Country Club has used Taylor Field turf on its putting greens since 2000, and four greens still had it this season, including a cut-out number three from the 30-yard line on the third hole. Those greens are being replaced, but deputy mayor Debbie Kramer said the town has talked about putting that number three in a shadow box at the clubhouse.

🏙️ CITY UPDATE

Regina names its next city manager
Regina has picked its next city manager from inside City Hall. Council approved Chad Jedlic for the job on Wednesday, and he takes over on Jan. 4, 2027, leading roughly 3,000 city employees and answering directly to council. Jedlic joined the city in 2021 and is currently its director of land, real estate and economic development, a role that has included planning work on the Taylor Field redevelopment and the Yards project. Before that, he was vice-president of development at Forster Harvard Development Corp. and spent more than a decade in senior development and property management roles with Harvard Developments.
Mayor Chad Bachynski described Jedlic as a talented, thoughtful and respected leader with a strong track record of collaboration and an innate understanding of the community. Jedlic, a longtime Regina resident, said the city has tremendous opportunity and that he looks forward to continuing to serve "the city I am proud to call home." Outside of work, he has held volunteer and board roles with the Regina and Region Home Builders' Association, the Regina Rowing Club and the Cathedral Village Arts Festival. Council also thanked Jim Nicol for his steady leadership as acting city manager over the past year and a half.
A hometown hire with the Taylor Field file already on his desk.

New long-term care home hits 30 per cent
Regina's new long-term care home is now 30 per cent built. The 240-bed Regina Specialized Long-Term Care Home, the largest long-term care facility under construction in the province, is scheduled to open in mid-2028 on a site south of the Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus. It will care for residents with complex needs such as dementia and brain injuries and will replace the beds at the long-term care facility in the Pioneer Village neighbourhood. Seniors' Minister Lori Carr said the home will employ 460 full-time health-care workers once it opens.
Carr said Pioneer Village residents will likely be the first to move in, and that some patients will be repatriated to Regina. With a wait list in place, she expects the home to fill quickly, and she said having care close to home means families can visit their loved ones more often. Crews have been pouring concrete for the building's wings since March, and Sask Builds Minister Sean Wilson said roofing, windows and door frames are next over the coming months.

🐦 ARTS & CULTURE
A bird book with Cree and Saulteaux roots
A new book five years in the making brings together Plains Cree and Saulteaux knowledge of the birds that share Saskatchewan's skies. ka-papamihacik/Ka-papamihsēwāt, "Those Who Fly Around": Plains Cree and Saulteaux Birds gathers stories from elders of several nations, including Cote, Fishing Lake, Ahtahkakoop and the Touchwood Agency Tribal Council. One of its co-authors is Andrew Miller, an associate professor of Indigenous studies at First Nations University of Canada here in Regina. Miller said the idea grew out of hearing elders share stories about birds, cultural landscapes, place names and Indigenous histories across the province.
The book sets Cree, Saulteaux and English side by side, showing how Indigenous bird names often come from how the birds behave. One thing Miller learned along the way: in Saulteaux, the northern flicker is called a digger, because it forages in the soil for ants and grubs. Co-author and FSIN Sen. Bill Strongarm of Keeseekoose First Nation said readers learn both languages as they go, which he hopes will create more speakers. Mahekan Ahenakew took on the editing work of his late father, co-author Barry Ahenakew. Cree illustrator Lindsey Bear did the artwork, with photos by Christian Art.
A field guide and a language lesson in one.
