Environment Canada has today shaping up mild and mostly cloudy, with a high near 15°C and only a slim chance of rain. Saturday cools off with lows near freezing overnight, then Sunday climbs back to a dry, crisp 16°C with clear skies, just about perfect conditions for anyone lacing up for a race this weekend.

It's a big sports weekend in the Queen City. The 26th annual Queen City Marathon takes over downtown starting tonight, the Pats close out a perfect pre-season at the Brandt Centre, and there's plenty more worth celebrating, from a fresh crop of scholarship winners to a stack of academic medals. Let's get into it.

In today's edition:

The 26th annual GMS Queen City Marathon gets underway Friday evening, with race weekend headquartered at the Conexus Arts Centre. The three day event runs Friday's Night Owl 5K through Saturday's mini marathon and family 5K to Sunday's marquee morning of races, including the full marathon, half marathon, 10K, wheelchair race, and team relay. The event is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and draws runners from across the region every year.

Sunday morning is when the action peaks. The City of Regina 42.2K Walk and wheelchair race start at 7:00 AM, followed by the full marathon run at 7:30, the half marathon and team relay at 8:00, and the 10K at 8:30. With Sunday's forecast calling for clear skies and a high near 16°C, conditions look ideal for a fast finish. Expect road closures around Wascana Centre and the Conexus Arts Centre through the weekend if you're not lacing up yourself.

The Regina Pats put their unbeaten pre-season record on the line Friday night, hosting the Prince Albert Raiders at the Brandt Centre. Regina enters the game 5-0 in exhibition play after a 7-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday, powered by a Zach Lansard hat trick. It's the club's final tune up before opening the regular season on the road against Prince Albert on September 18.

Overage forward Ellis Mieyette has been one of Regina's top offensive threats through the pre-season, leading the club with five points on four goals and an assist through two appearances, while fellow 20 year old Zach Moore sits second in team scoring with four points through three games. With the club still needing to trim its 20 year old roster down to three by October 10, Friday's game is one of the last chances for players on the bubble to make their case before the Pats return home for good on September 27 against Swift Current.

Regina City Council this week recognized the newest recipients of the Henry Baker Scholarship Program, the city's longstanding award for post secondary students who combine academic excellence with community involvement. Up to 18 scholarships are handed out annually (17 valued at $2,000 and one at $1,000) to students attending eligible institutions in Regina, including the University of Regina, First Nations University of Canada, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic. The program dates back to 1990 and was renamed in 1997 in honour of Henry Baker, Regina's longest serving mayor and a former teacher. Since 2009 alone, the City says it has awarded more than $430,000 to over 200 students. It's a quiet but meaningful piece of civic support for the next generation of Regina's post secondary students.

Keep an eye on your mailbox this week. Darke Hall is delivering its full 26/27 Presents season brochure to 55,000 households across Regina. Inside is the historic venue's complete lineup of live music, comedy, and storytelling for the year ahead, featuring returning favorites and new names, plus details on accessible pricing and $10 youth tickets for anyone under 20.

Darke Hall says the brochure is meant to be something people can hang onto and revisit throughout the season, rather than something to scroll past once online. If yours doesn't turn up, copies are available in person at the hall. It's a nice, old fashioned way to plan a year of nights out downtown.

Regina Public Schools is congratulating 11 students who earned the Governor General's Academic Medal this year, awarded to the student with the highest academic average at each of the division's high schools, according to Regina Public Schools. The medal, established in 1873 by Lord Dufferin, Canada's third governor general after Confederation, is one of the oldest and most prestigious academic honours a Canadian high school student can receive.

Recipients are presented with a medal along with a personalized certificate signed by the Governor General, though there's no cash award attached. The honour is entirely about recognizing the work. Regina Public Schools wished all 11 students well as they head into their next chapter.
