Summer's last hurrah lands today. Environment Canada is calling for sunshine and a high near 28°C, then a cooler but still sunny weekend with highs around 21°C Saturday and 18°C Sunday. Plan your patio time accordingly.

A first-place football rivalry and a busy weekend of hockey, music and art lead the way today. Let's get into it.

The University of Regina Rams host the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday at Mosaic Stadium, and this year's provincial rivalry game comes with first place attached. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Both teams are 2-1 in Canada West, part of a four-way tie at the top with Manitoba and UBC. The Rams are looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season, a 25-20 defeat in B.C. last weekend. Regina led 20-10 at the half before the Thunderbirds took over, rushing for 223 yards.

Head coach Mark McConkey didn't sugarcoat the loss on the SportsCage Thursday, saying his team simply didn't play well, but he called it a good learning moment, a good reset week for us. The Huskies arrive rolling after a 65-12 win over Alberta, one of the highest-scoring games in their history. McConkey expects Saskatchewan to have a few new wrinkles saved for the rivalry, and he says the tight standings are proof that in Canada West, anyone can win any given day.

Getting around Regina on foot this winter should get a little easier. City council voted 9-1 on Wednesday to have city crews clear sidewalks along several major corridors, including portions of Albert Street, Victoria Avenue, Dewdney Avenue, 11th Avenue, Gordon Road, Rochdale Boulevard, Sherwood Drive and Chuka Boulevard. The expanded service is expected to cost about $288,180 a year. Funding of $110,400 is already secured for November and December, while the remaining $166,000 for early 2027 will be considered during December's budget deliberations.

The goal is to have those sidewalks cleared within 48 hours after any snowfall of at least five centimetres, with a 24-hour target for downtown. Every sidewalk in the city centre will also be prioritized. Acting Deputy Mayor David Froh said the change supports infrastructure while making it easier for folks to come and enjoy these important parts of our city centre. The city has put more than $60 million into recent upgrades on Dewdney Avenue and 11th Avenue.

Two horses named Mooney and Jimmy stood on the University of Regina's Academic Green on Wednesday, welcoming visitors to an open house for the school's Indigenous wellness programs. Guests toured three spaces in the education building: the Nanâtawihowikamik Healing Lodge and Wellness Clinic, the Roots to Wellness Research Collaboratory, and a brand-new SAGE space for Indigenous master's and PhD students. Dr. JoLee Sasakamoose, who leads Roots to Wellness, said the day represents roughly 14 years of work. Because of its sacred nature, the lodge hasn't been widely showcased, but she feels the timing is now right.

The lodge also serves as a training clinic for early-career counsellors, bringing ceremony, Elders, animals and nature into the work. SAGE coordinator Courtney Lavalley said the new space gives Indigenous grad students a place to gather and learn from one another. The horses came courtesy of HMS Learning Through Equine, an Indigenous-owned organization that partners with the lodge on horse-based healing workshops. Founder Brittany Lawres said each session is run as a ceremony, opening with prayer and a smudge.

Regina's land bank now holds 46 lots, and some of them could become affordable homes for the price of a loonie. Land bank properties appraised at $100,000 or less can be leased or sold for $1, and Mayor Chad Bachynski says the first intake drew "quite a bit of interest." The city began buying land for the bank in 2024 using money from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund. Community land trusts are first in line for lots, followed by non-profits, for-profit builders, and neighbours looking to add a side lot.

Bachynski spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Ottawa at a Federation of Canadian Municipalities housing conference, pushing for more federal support for land banks. He said land prices can be the biggest barrier to affordable housing, and cutting that cost gives the city a much higher chance of getting it built. The city hasn't set a target for units per parcel, with Bachynski saying the focus will be on what kind of housing is needed. He'll return to Ottawa in October alongside other local mayors and provincial representatives.

A $1 lot is a pretty good head start.
