Regina's friendly local roundup | Wednesday, October 14, 2026
Happy Wednesday, Regina! 👋
Thanksgiving Monday came with a side of snow, but it didn't stick around. Regina only picked up a couple of centimetres around dawn before it turned to rain and melted away. We'll be back in the teens within a couple of days, and he's calling for 21°C by Saturday.
Today we've got David Garneau's new show at the Central Library, a three-year plan for Indigenous education in Regina Public Schools, the Albert Street North overpasses back open and free flu shots for everyone. Let's get into it.

🎨 ARTS & CULTURE

David Garneau's Dark Chapters lands at the Central Library
Métis artist David Garneau has brought his touring exhibition Dark Chapters to the Dunlop Art Gallery inside Regina's Central Library, where it's on display until Jan. 5, 2027. Curated by Arin Fay of the Nelson Museum Archives and Gallery, the show gathers about 40 meticulously painted still lifes drawn from a series Garneau has developed over more than six years. The title borrows Justice Murray Sinclair's description of the residential school system as one of the darkest chapters in Canada's history. Garneau, a visual arts professor at the University of Regina, arranges everyday things like books, rope, tea and stones to open conversations about colonization and identity.
He chose still life because it's considered the most conservative, least political kind of painting, and he wanted to fill it with bigger ideas. Rather than show suffering directly, he invites viewers to study the objects and piece together the meaning for themselves. Garneau has lived in Regina for 27 years and calls the library a home away from home, so he loves that people dropping in for a book might stumble onto his work.
Free, downtown and open until January. Go see it.
🎓 EDUCATION

Regina Public Schools lays out a three-year plan for Indigenous education
Regina Public Schools has a new three-year plan to guide Indigenous education, and a central piece is bringing Treaty teachings into every student's studies. Revealed Sept. 8, the framework rests on five principles: respect, relationality, reciprocity, relevance and responsibility. Principal on assignment Shannon Fayant built it on more than 30 years in the division, with input from the Indigenous Education Advisory Council, community Elders, the Indigenous Student Forum and Indigenous advocates. Because most teachers are non-Indigenous, she also reached out to teachers and administrators already leading this work to ask where the division needs to go next.
The elementary grades come first. The division is looking at lowering pupil-teacher ratios for Grade 1 and making sure Treaty education runs through the curriculum from kindergarten to Grade 12, with frameworks for both elementary and high school. Professional development modules are in the works too. For now, staff are working through it together under the name nanâtawihowin, which translates as healing medicine. High school students can already graduate with a Métis sash or Treaty medal, and every public school in the city will fly the Métis flag throughout November.
A plan built with Elders and students. That's a good place to start.
🚧 CITY UPDATE

The Albert Street North overpasses are open again
Good news for anyone heading north out of the city: construction on the Albert Street North overpasses is done. The City of Regina says full access to Albert Street and all of its ramps was set to resume on the evening of Oct. 9. The $17.4 million project ran over two construction seasons, with the southbound structure finished in 2025 and the northbound one wrapping up this month. The overpasses carry a key route connecting Ring Road traffic to Highways 6 and 11 on the city's north side.
Crews rebuilt the top side of both structures, refurbished the existing foundations and raised the clearance by 0.6 metres, or about two feet. That extra height should cut down on costly damage from over-height vehicles, and new barriers and guardrails bring the overpasses up to modern safety standards. Kurtis Doney, deputy city manager of city operations, said the upgrades will extend the life of the overpasses while reducing the risk of collisions and disruptions for drivers.
Two seasons of lane shuffles, finished. Enjoy the drive.
💉 HEALTH

Free flu and COVID-19 shots are now open to everyone
Saskatchewan's fall immunization campaign is officially underway. As of Tuesday, every resident six months and older can get free influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. For most people, shots are available at Saskatchewan Health Authority mass immunization clinics, public health offices, physicians, nurse practitioners and participating pharmacies. Kids four and under need to go to an immunization clinic, a public health office, a physician or a nurse practitioner. You can book an appointment and find more information at SaskHealthAuthority
Infection rates are still low, and health officials want to keep it that way. SHA medical health officer Dr. Vivian Onaemo told CBC News that only 20 per cent of the province got a flu shot last year, and COVID-19 uptake was lower still at the campaign launch in Saskatoon, noting that flu season usually runs from October to April with peaks and lows. Dr. Ibrahim Khan of Indigenous Services Canada added that getting your shot also protects higher-risk people around you, from young babies to elderly people with lung conditions.
A quick stop at the pharmacy now beats a week on the couch later.
