Happy Monday, Regina! 👋

Showers move through today but the skies should clear up fast: Tuesday brings a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 15°C, and by Wednesday we're looking at 17-18°C and clearing skies. A good week to have an umbrella in the car for the first half and sunglasses for the second.

There is a lot to like in this edition: a downtown arts hub finally has a permanent home, the Thunder are 5-0, a Roughrider kicker had a night to remember, and Foo Fighters play the biggest stage in the city on Tuesday. Let's get into it.

After three years working out of temporary spaces, Creative City Centre has moved into a permanent home at 1819 Cornwall Street, officially opening September 10 with more than 200 local events planned for its first year there. The nonprofit arts hub had outgrown its old Hamilton Street building, where founder and CEO Marian Donnelly said some concertgoers had to be carried up two long, narrow flights of stairs just to see a show.

The new building fixes that: it is wheelchair accessible, with a ground-floor gallery exhibiting primarily Saskatchewan artists, including three exhibits a year curated in partnership with Sâkêwêwak. Expect music concerts, poetry slams, film screenings, artist talks and workshops to fill the calendar in the months ahead. It is a bigger stage for Regina's independent arts scene, and it landed right in the heart of downtown.

Long before Nirvana or the Foo Fighters, a 20-year-old Dave Grohl came through Regina as the drummer for hardcore punk band Scream, playing a May 1989 show at what was then called the Venue. Local punk fan Skip Taylor was there and still has it on VHS. After the show, Grohl and the band crashed on the floor of a friend's house before driving on to Winnipeg the next morning.

Grohl returns to Regina in a rather different capacity on Tuesday, September 15, when Foo Fighters headline Mosaic Stadium with Queens of the Stone Age and Mannequin Pussy as part of the Take Cover Tour. Doors open at 5:30 PM. It is the band's first-ever Regina show, thirty-seven years after that first, considerably smaller one.

The Regina Thunder left little doubt about who is the best team in the Prairie Football Conference right now, outscoring the Saskatoon Hilltops 30-6 in the second half en route to a 37-13 win Saturday night at Leibel Field. It was a first-place showdown between the province's two junior football powerhouses, and Regina controlled it from the ground up, with Peter Boersch gaining positive yardage on his first three carries of the game.

Peter Boersch and Marcus Butz each scored two touchdowns as Regina improved to 5-0 on the season, while Saskatoon fell to 3-2 and second place in the PFC. The two archrivals will meet again in Saskatoon later this month, but for now, the Thunder have made their point loud and clear.

Saturday's Labour Day Classic rematch in Winnipeg gave Roughriders fans a new name to know: kicker Dawson Hodge, a 24-year-old Wilfrid Laurier grad, made a perfect debut in Green and White, nailing a 33-yard field goal on the final play of the first half and a 27-yarder in the third quarter for Saskatchewan's only points in a 19-6 loss. Head coach Corey Mace made the switch from Alex Hale after a pair of costly misses the week before.

Hodge credited staying calm under pressure. The Riders now head into their bye week before travelling to face the Lions on September 25.

For the second year running, members of the Regina Police Service's SWAT unit rappelled down the side of Regina General Hospital on Thursday, passing right by the pediatric unit's playroom windows before landing in the courtyard dressed as Batman, Captain America and other favorites. The RPS canine unit joined them afterward for visits with young patients and their families, and the whole event raised more than $15,000 for the hospital's pediatric programs.

The fundraiser was organized with the Hospitals of Regina Foundation and the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and foundation leadership says supporting children's health care remains the organization's top priority. It's a small thing in the scheme of a hospital stay, and clearly a big one to the kids watching from the window.
