🎖️ HISTORY

The Royal Regina Rifles' colours are home

The Royal Regina Rifles' battlefield flags are back where they started. On Wednesday, the regimental colours were hung permanently in the rotunda of the Legislative Building, nearly 110 years after they first went up there. The flags were displayed in the building after the First World War, moved to St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral in 1977, then came down again for renovations in 2024. The eight flags represent four Rifles battalions: the 28th Northwest, 68th, 195th and 249th. Soldiers carried them through the Great War in Europe, and the 28th Battalion alone had more than 6,000 casualties among its 10,000 members, with 922 killed in action.

Swift Current's John Watson, the last living member of the regiment from the Second World War, stood at a salute as the national anthem played. He called it a real honour to see the colours back and thanked everyone who did the work to return them. Lt.-Col. Kevin Barry, the regiment's commanding officer, said the flags were the most treasured possessions of the soldiers who served under them. Provincial military liaison Blaine McLeod pointed out that all the flags are the same age, but some are more ragged than others because Saskatchewan soldiers fought beneath them. They'll stay in the rotunda for as long as possible.

Next time you're in the building, look up.

Tabashniuk blanks Seattle as the Pats roll

The Pats exploded for five goals in the second period on Wednesday and cruised past the Seattle Thunderbirds 6-0 at the Brandt Centre. Taylor Tabashniuk turned aside all 18 shots he faced for the first shutout of his WHL career. After a scoreless first, Samuel Karsay opened the scoring at 4:24 of the second, and Maddox Schultz, Liam Pue, Zachary Lansard and Mathis Paull all followed before the period was out. Connor Bear added a power-play goal in the third. Karsay, Bear and Schultz each finished with a goal and an assist, while Matt Paranych picked up two helpers.

The win moves Regina to 5-4-0-1 and keeps the Pats perfect at home at 4-0, where they've outscored opponents 23-4 this season. It was only the second time in five years the team has scored five times in one period, the last coming against Calgary on Feb. 19, 2024. Regina outshot Seattle 38-18 and killed off all four Thunderbirds power plays. It was also the Pats' second straight home shutout of Seattle, following an 8-0 win on Oct. 19, 2024. The homestand continues tonight against the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7 p.m., and the Everett Silvertips visit on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Four home games, four wins. Keep it rolling tonight.

Free Parkinson's exercise classes land in Regina

People living with Parkinson's in Regina now have a free, permanent place to work out together. U-Turn Parkinson's, a charity that got its start in Winnipeg, has opened at the Regina Sports Performance Centre on Broadway Avenue, offering weekly classes and peer support. The push to bring it here came from Terry Leigh, who was diagnosed in 2017, and Jo Anne, the couple who spent years advocating for a local location. Jo Anne first met the U-Turn team, learned about the program and decided Regina needed it too.

The classes are free thanks to bursaries, grants and fundraising by the Regina Parkinson's Support Group. U-Turn's programming focuses on strength, balance, agility, coordination and cognitive training, and the charity also runs EmpowerED, a free monthly education series on living well as you age. The name has a fun backstory: founder Tim Hague Sr. took it from his and his son's experience winning The Amazing Race Canada, where teams can "U-turn" rivals to slow them down. Here, the idea is to slow the disease instead. Details are at uturnparkinsons.org.

Exercise and good company, both on the house.

Have you seen these fire pits?

The Warehouse District is hoping Regina can help track down three big black fire pits before the cold sets in. In a social media post, the Regina Warehouse Business Improvement District said the heavy pits were last seen at The Yards on Dewdney Avenue on Sept. 11. Executive director Pam Malach said they were first built for the February Frost Festival, but the district has found them handy right through the winter for special community events and gatherings. They're large enough that using one requires a permit, so these aren't exactly something you'd lose behind the couch.

The pits come with a bit of local history, too. Malach said a group of talented students at SIAST, now Saskatchewan Polytechnic, built them, and they've since become a treasured piece of art. She said the post has drawn plenty of concern and sympathy from people across the city, and she appreciates everyone pitching in to help bring them back. If you've spotted three oversized black fire pits somewhere they don't belong, the Warehouse District would love to hear from you.

Winter's coming. Let's get them home.

More women can now book a screening mammogram

If you're a woman 40 or older, you can now book a routine screening mammogram through BreastCheck. Saskatchewan widened eligibility to that age group in July, opening the program to about 76,000 more women, and the province is highlighting the change during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. BreastCheck runs eight screening centres plus two mobile units that bring screening to 42 rural and northern communities. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, the province performed more than 37,500 screening mammograms, its highest annual total in five years, along with more than 74,600 diagnostic mammograms.

Here at home, the Regina Breast Health Centre has received nearly 2,700 referrals since opening in April 2025. It brings diagnostic imaging, biopsies, specialist consultations, patient navigation and rehabilitation together under one roof. The 2026-27 provincial budget adds $397,000 for operations at the Regina and Saskatoon centres, on top of more than $15 million invested in breast health since 2023-24. Brenda Lock, the SHA's interim executive director of medical imaging, summed it up in four words: "Early detection saves lives." The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency is encouraging everyone who's eligible to use BreastCheck.

Eligible? Book it. It's a short appointment worth making.
