A Regina 12-year-old is one vote at a time from his own comic book

Tony Dubois entered the 2026 Stan Lee's Super Kid competition almost on a whim, and now the 12-year-old sits first in his group. His dad, John, spotted the contest while scrolling Facebook and figured there was nothing to lose. Since then the family has watched Tony climb from around 75th place to 50th, then 30th, then into the top 10 and up to the top spot. His school, Seven Stones Community School, has helped spread the word. The Top 10 round of public voting runs until October 8, with group finals later this month.

The grand-prize winner gets a $25,000 honorarium and four VIP passes to the 2027 L.A. Comic Con. They'll also appear as an illustrated character in a special-edition Stan Lee comic. Tony has cerebral palsy, and he already has his powers picked out: slowing down time, telekinesis and "super smarts," which he'd use to help people. Batman is still his all-time favourite. Anyone can cast one free vote every 24 hours, and the final public vote is set for November.

One free vote a day. Let's get this kid into a comic book.

Liam Pue's first WHL hat trick hands Calgary its first loss

Liam Pue picked a good afternoon for his first WHL hat trick. The Regina Pats rolled past the Calgary Hitmen 7-2 on Sunday at the Scotiabank Saddledome, ending Calgary's perfect start to the season. The Hitmen were chasing their first 5-0 start since 2009-10. Keets Fawcett opened the scoring at 1:51 and Pue doubled the lead, but Calgary tied it in the second period. Pue put Regina back in front at 14:28, and Matthew Paranych made it 4-2 in a period the Pats dominated 13-4 on shots.

Samuel Karsay added insurance in the third with his first WHL goal. Pue sealed the hat trick with 48.8 seconds left and Calgary's net empty, and Owen Sejna capped the scoring on a power play with five seconds to go. Taylor Tabashniuk stopped 21 shots to earn the win, which moves Regina to 2-2-0-1. Pue was named first star and Fawcett took third. The Pats are back home Friday night against the Prince Albert Raiders.

Five unanswered goals and a hat trick on the road. That'll play.

The Thunder will host a playoff game at Leibel Field

The Regina Thunder had first place in the Prairie Football Conference locked up before Saturday's finale, and they played like a team with bigger games ahead. Quarterback Jayden Zelionka threw touchdown passes to Lucas Di Iorio, Carwyn Williams and Benjamin Walz and ran one in himself. Regina built a 28-7 halftime lead at Leibel Field. Head coach Scott MacAulay started resting key players late in the first half to protect their health and give his depth some reps. The Calgary Colts rallied for a 46-30 win.

The result ended Regina's bid for an unbeaten season, but it doesn't change what matters most. The Thunder finish atop the PFC standings with home-field advantage through the playoffs, starting with a semifinal rematch against the Colts on Sunday at Leibel Field. "To keep on going in the playoffs you have to be healthy, and also you got to have depth," MacAulay. He admitted he wasn't feeling good about the loss but said the team would learn from it and be fully prepared.

A rematch, at home, with the season on the line. Leibel is the place to be Sunday.

⛸️ CITY UPDATE

Free skating is back, and golf season is down to its final week

Lace up, Regina. The City's indoor rinks are open, and every public skate this winter season is free. Based on resident feedback, the City has expanded its low-sensory skates, which run with reduced lighting, no music and a lower attendance cap. It has also added stick and puck sessions, where skaters can work on hockey or ringette skills with no formal instruction, scrimmages or slapshots. Indoor public skating runs October through March, with schedules at Regina.ca/Rinks.

Golfers, meanwhile, are down to their last few rounds. Sunday was the final day at Lakeview, and Goulet, Tor Hill and Murray close on October 12. Tor Hill stays busy once the flags come out, with trails open all winter for skiing, biking, skating and snowshoeing. With 24°C and sunshine in today's forecast, you may never get a better excuse to sneak out for nine.

Clubs this week, skates the next. Very Regina.

October is Foster Families Month in Saskatchewan

October is officially Foster Families Month in Saskatchewan. It's a chance to recognize the households that open their doors to kids who can't safely stay with their own families. Foster families make a lasting difference in the lives of children and youth across Saskatchewan. The province partners with the Saskatchewan Foster Families Association on training, advocacy and ongoing support for caregivers. Appreciation events are planned in communities across the province all month long.

Deb Davies, the association's executive director, said much of what foster families do "happens quietly, without recognition." It's the school runs, the suppers around the table and the tough days when a child needs to feel safe. The month is also meant to raise awareness about fostering itself. If you've ever wondered whether it could be right for your family, the SFFA can walk you through it at 1-800-667-7002 or saskfosterfamilies.ca.

Know a foster family? This is the month to tell them thanks.
