Happy Monday, Regina! 👋

The weekend brought sunshine, a national golf championship on home turf, and a strong week for Regina in the headlines, from a labour deal for local child-care workers to a new judge with deep community roots. Let's get into it, then your full events guide for Monday through Wednesday.

In today's edition:

Wascana Country Club welcomed the top junior golfers in Canada last week for the 2026 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, the first national golf championship held in Saskatchewan since 2018. Tiger Xie of Surrey, B.C. capped the week with a comeback for the ages on Friday, trailing leader Michael Vivone of Ottawa by two shots heading into the final round before a birdie on the 15th tied things up and another on 18 sealed the win.

Five Saskatchewan golfers made the 36-hole cut, including Regina's Aricin Franklin, who called it the strongest local showing in years. Wascana Country Club general manager Craig Prentice said hosting the event was "an honour" for a course with a history dating back to 1911. With the CPKC Women's Open also held there in 2018, Wascana continues to prove it belongs on the national stage.

After years of a sluggish downtown market, local commercial agents say things are turning around. Josh Chung of REMAX says building sales and leasing activity have taken a positive turn over the past five years, pointing to recent deals like the sale of the Lancaster Building on Hamilton Street and 1854 MacIntyre Street selling to the Saskatchewan Realtors Association. Office space, he says, "is slowly leasing up."

Parking remains the biggest factor for businesses weighing a downtown move, but Chung expects the full reopening of 11th Avenue later this year to help draw more professional services back to the core. The City of Regina has also confirmed most standalone surface parking downtown is now designated for specific uses. It's a slow build, but the trendline downtown is finally pointing up.

CUPE 4449 members at the Glencairn Child Care Co-operative ratified a new collective agreement on August 5, securing enhanced seniority language and a key protection for early childhood educators: if the province's temporary wage enhancement grant is ever discontinued, affected workers keep their current wages until a new rate is negotiated.

CUPE Saskatchewan president Kent Peterson said the bargaining committee "worked hard to protect members from the immediate impact of any future changes" to that funding. Glencairn has operated as a licensed non-profit in Regina since 1983, caring for children aged 18 months to 12 years. For the educators there, it's a deal that adds some real stability to a demanding job.

Saskatchewan finished fifth overall at the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, collecting 57 medals in all: 22 gold, 17 silver and 18 bronze. Regina's Taylor Carter delivered one of the highlight moments of the whole Games, sinking a hole-in-one on the 16th hole at Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club on his way to a gold medal, a shot that went viral with tens of thousands of views.

Regina's Micheal Qing was equally busy in the pool, taking home silver in both the 50-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke, plus bronze in the 100-metre individual medley. "Every athlete who wears the Saskatchewan jersey has already achieved something extraordinary," said Special Olympics Saskatchewan executive director Rhae-Ann Holoien. Regina, take a bow alongside them.

Suzanne Lalonde has been appointed a judge on the Regina Provincial Court, one of five new judicial appointments announced across the province last week. Lalonde earned her law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2000, was called to the bar the following year, and was named King's Counsel in 2023 after nearly two decades as a staff lawyer with Legal Aid Saskatchewan, focused largely on criminal defence for people facing complex challenges.

Beyond the courtroom, Lalonde has served as a bencher of the Law Society of Saskatchewan since 2018, including terms as president and vice-president, and has volunteered with Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan, the John Howard Society, Phoenix Academy and Diversified Services. It's the kind of resume that speaks to a career built on showing up for people.
