What a weekend to be a sports fan in the Queen City. The Roughriders clawed back from a big second-half deficit to beat Toronto, the Pats wrapped training camp with a packed Fan Fest at Confederation Park, and Regina Matsuri brought the sounds of Japan to the Performing Arts Centre for the first time in seven years. Add a fresh coat of paint on one of the city's most charming heritage homes, and it's a good morning to start the week.

September starts tomorrow, and the Pats' pre-season home slate kicks off at the Brandt Centre right alongside it. Here's your Monday rundown.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders shook off a 22-7 deficit to beat the Toronto Argonauts 28-24 in front of a sold-out crowd of 33,350 at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday, snapping a two-game losing streak. Trevor Harris passed for 313 yards, including 200 in the second half, and found Tommy Stevens for the go-ahead two-yard touchdown with 2:57 left after Toronto was flagged offside on what would have been a game-tying field goal attempt. Receiver KeeSean Johnson caught 10 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.

"It was a character win for our football team," head coach Corey Mace said afterward. Saskatchewan improved to 7-4 and moved into sole possession of second place in the CFL's West Division, two points behind Edmonton. The Roughriders are back home at Mosaic Stadium next Sunday, September 6, for the 61st Labour Day Classic against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Regina Pats closed out 2026 Training Camp on Sunday, with Team White scoring four unanswered third-period goals to beat Team Blue 8-4 in the annual Blue and White Game at the Brandt Centre. The week also crowned the club's first-ever Hornung Cup champion, with Team Steel winning the round-robin tournament named for late Pats captain Brad Hornung. Ahead of the game, families packed Confederation Park for the Pats' Fan Fest, with a bouncy castle, face painting and a BBQ.

The Pats now shift into pre-season play, hosting the Swift Current Broncos in a rookie game Tuesday and the Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday, both at the Brandt Centre. It's the club's first look at the 2026-27 roster in game action, with three of the team's seven pre-season contests set for home ice this month.

More than 600 students moved into residence at the University of Regina's Kīšik Towers on Friday, as volunteers and staff greeted arriving families with moving carts, a BBQ and hallway high-fives ahead of Wednesday's start to fall classes. Move-in ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with faculty, staff and student volunteers helping haul boxes and suitcases up to new rooms.

Many parents were pleasantly surprised to find volunteers and carts waiting, having expected to make several trips on their own between vehicles and rooms.

The Swiss Chalet-style home at 2812 McCallum Avenue in Old Lakeview, known around the neighbourhood as the "Doll House," is having its heritage features restored and repainted in brighter colours. Built in 1928 and designed by architect William Van Egmond as a wedding present for his daughter, the two-storey cottage was designated a municipal heritage property in 1983 for its steep gable roof, pointed-arch windows and heavy split-cedar shingle facing.

The restoration keeps one of Regina's most photographed small homes standing for another generation, tucked into the Old Lakeview streetscape it has anchored for nearly a century. It's a nice reminder of the character hiding on some of Regina's older residential blocks.

The Regina Japanese Cultural Club revived Regina Matsuri on Saturday, the city's Japanese summer festival, for the first time in seven years, drawing crowds to the Regina Performing Arts Centre for food, live performances and cultural demonstrations. This year's festival welcomed a delegation from Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture, Regina's official friendship city, including two performance groups sharing traditional Japanese arts: the Midoricho Matsuri Bayashi and the Nankin Tamasudare Group.

Regina Matsuri shares Japanese traditions with the people of Regina and allows everyone to experience Japan right here in our city. Organizers say this year's festival carries extra significance, coinciding with the announcement of September as Japanese Heritage Month across Saskatchewan.
