Regina's friendly local roundup Friday, April 10, 2026

Happy Friday, Regina! 👋

After a cold and snowy week, the weekend is arriving like a gift. Friday is coming in at 10°C and sunny, with Saturday climbing all the way to 13°C. Open those windows. After the clipper that rolled through Wednesday, this feels downright tropical.

The news this week has been genuinely worth celebrating: Saskatchewan just doubled its mobile mammography capacity, the University of Regina laid out a bold 10-year vision, and your defending Grey Cup champions are a month away from camp. There is plenty to be proud of in this city and province right now. Let's get into it.

Saskatchewan Now Has Two Mobile Mammography Units -- and Regina Is Where It All Started

Women across Saskatchewan, especially those in rural and northern communities, got some major news on Wednesday. The province's second mobile mammography unit was unveiled right here in Regina and will begin visiting communities next week. The new unit is a full semi-trailer, the maximum size allowed on Saskatchewan highways, and communities can now expect more frequent visits and screening offered to more women annually.

In an average 12-hour day, 50 to 54 women can be seen, doubling the number of mobile appointments available across the province. That expanded capacity is arriving at exactly the right time. As of January 2026, Saskatchewan lowered its screening eligibility age to 43, with plans to bring it down to 40 by the end of June, a change that will open access to an additional 76,000 women province-wide. With the second unit, the province could add up to 15,000 additional scans annually, potentially more than a third of total provincial mammography volume.

It is a significant investment in women's health, and the fact that the launch happened in Regina makes it a local story worth sharing. If you or someone you know has been putting off a screening, now is a good time to check in with your doctor.

🎓 EDUCATION

The University of Regina Just Launched Its Vision for the Next Decade

The University of Regina unveiled its 2026 - 2035 strategic plan on Wednesday, and the name says it clearly: Together, We Serve. The plan sets a clear and confident direction for the university's next ten years, built on five pillars : Together, We Learn; Together, We Discover; Together, We Build; Together, We Put Things Right; and Together, We Innovate.

The plan follows consultations that involved more than a thousand people, including students, faculty, staff, Indigenous communities and partners, regional colleges, and federated colleges. It arrives at an honest moment for the institution. Federal changes to immigration policy have led to a steep decline in international student enrolments and a $20-million decline in revenue. President Jeff Keshen framed the plan as the right anchor for navigating that reality, pointing to growing investment in nuclear energy research, health and human resources, and energy transition as areas of genuine momentum. Chancellor Cadmus Delorme joined the president and board chair Adynea Russell to cut a campus-scale-model cake at the launch. A fitting way to celebrate a plan built by over a thousand voices.

🏈 RIDERS

Corey Mace Is Ready to Chase Another Grey Cup -- Training Camp Is a Month Away

The defending Grey Cup champions are getting close to game speed. Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp opens in Saskatoon on May 10, and head coach Corey Mace, fresh off being named the CFL's 2025 Coach of the Year, made clear this week that nothing will be handed to anyone when camp opens.

The team has continued adding players ahead of camp, with defensive end James Vaughters among the key additions to the defence. The competition at the opposite defensive end spot will be one of the most watched battles of training camp. Quarterback Trevor Harris is back, publicly focused on pushing the standard higher. Fans in Saskatoon can catch the Riders' final preseason tune-up on May 23 at Griffiths Stadium against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Tickets are on sale now at Riderville.com.

It marks a rare opportunity to see the Grey Cup champions up close outside of Regina, and if Mace is right about the energy at Griffiths Stadium, it should be a show.

Saskatchewan Workplaces Hit a Historic Safety Milestone in 2025

Here is a number worth pausing on: in 2025, 89 per cent of provincially regulated workplaces in Saskatchewan reported zero fatalities and zero injuries. That is a meaningful milestone in a province with a strong resource and trades sector where the work is genuinely demanding and the risks are real.

It reflects years of steady work by employers, workers, and safety professionals who showed up every day and made it a priority. The people who work on rigs and job sites and warehouse floors and construction crews across this province deserve credit for a number like that. Well done, Saskatchewan.
