Fall is starting the week on its best behaviour. The forecast calls for sunshine and a high around 19°C today and 20°C on Tuesday before things cool to about 15°C on Wednesday, with overnight lows dipping close to freezing midweek. Grab the patio while you still can.

Wednesday is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and there are meaningful ways to mark it across the city, from a talking circle at the library to free admission at the MacKenzie. We've also got a Pats win, a new captain and a Hall of Fame night. Let's get into it.

In today's edition:

The Regina Pats gave the Brandt Centre plenty to cheer about Sunday afternoon, beating the Swift Current Broncos 6-2 in their home opener. Rookie winger Parker Trottier led the way with his first two WHL goals plus an assist, and the power play went 4-for-7. Zach Moore added a shorthanded goal in the third, while the penalty kill kept Swift Current off the board on all six of their chances. It was also the first win for head coach David Bell. Regina is now 1-1-0-1, and the team debuted new blue bulldog alternate jerseys.

The club also named its 2026-27 leadership group on Saturday. Defenceman Reese Hamilton, 19, from Whitewood becomes the 84th captain in franchise history after a career year that included 43 points. Maddox Schultz and Dayton Deschamps will be full-time alternates, with Kolton Bridgeman wearing an A at home and Moore on the road. The Pats now head to Alberta to play Edmonton on October 2 and Calgary on October 4 before returning home October 9 against Prince Albert.

A new captain, new jerseys and a win. Not a bad Sunday.

Regina Food for Learning, which has been feeding students in city schools since 1988, has a new home at 1440 Scarth Street. The building is roughly five to six times the size of the group's longtime kitchen at the Core Ritchie Neighbourhood Centre, and it was designed around how the organization preps, stores and delivers food. That extra room matters. Executive director Lin Gennutt said earlier this year that at least six schools had been turned away in recent years, and that demand has at least tripled over the past decade.

Last school year, the organization served 17 schools, handed out more than 20,000 pounds of food and provided 177,213 meals. With the new space, it has committed to 25 schools for 2026-27. Four part-time staff and a team of volunteers keep the cost of a snack at about $1.65, and more storage means buying in bulk and catching sales. Curious? The public open house is Friday, October 2 at 10 a.m.

More room, more schools, more full stomachs.

Regina's own Chris Getzlaf headlined the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2026, celebrated in Regina on Saturday with an induction ceremony at the Conexus Arts Centre as the hall marks 60 years. Getzlaf is a two-time Grey Cup champion who spent 10 of his 11 CFL seasons with his hometown Roughriders. He's joined in the athlete category by Humboldt heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton, a 2016 Olympic bronze medallist, and Saskatoon's Cameron Baerg, the first rower from the province to win both a world title and an Olympic medal.

Rounding out the athletes is the late Otto Huber of Lipton, who took up blind golf after a hunting accident and went on to win the 1995 British Open Blind Golf Championship. Builders Dr. Marlys Misfeldt (sport medicine and science) and Ross Wilson (basketball) are also part of the class, along with the 2011 to 2014 Saskatoon Valkyries football teams. The hall now honours 261 athletes, 175 builders and 132 teams.

Sixty years in, and the stories keep getting better.

Saskatchewan's protective services personnel who died in the line of duty now have a permanent memorial in Regina. The Saskatchewan Protective Services Memorial was unveiled Saturday morning on Memorial Way by the Legislative Building, with 66 names going back to 1905 etched into it. Those honoured include firefighters, police officers, paramedics, correctional workers, emergency communications staff, conservation officers and others, and space has been left to add names in future years.

The design features an image of the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal alongside a "helping hands" structure, and was chosen by a working group of first responder and public service organizations. Developed by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, the memorial cost about $900,000, including $100,000 from WorkSafe Saskatchewan. Families and dignitaries gathered for the unveiling, among them Lt.-Gov. Bernadette McIntyre, whose message to the families of the fallen was "that we will never forget."

Worth a quiet stop on your next walk past the area

After more than 20 years helping build baseball in Regina, Gary Brotzel is stepping away as general manager of the Regina Red Sox. Brotzel was a founding member of the community-owned, not-for-profit club when it returned to the Western Canadian Baseball League in 2005, and he played a key role in its WCBL championships in 2011, 2012 and 2025. His work has already earned him spots in both the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and the Regina Sports Hall of Fame.

In a statement, Brotzel said the goal back in 2005 was "to build something that belonged to the community." Taking over for the 2027 season is assistant GM Mitch MacDonald, who has spent nearly two decades with the Sox as a player, coach and member of management. MacDonald remains the only player in WCBL history to win the Triple Crown, and he was part of three championship teams. Red Sox CEO Gordon Pritchard said very few people understand the organization and the game the way MacDonald does.

Thanks for everything, Gary. The Sox are in good hands.
