Regina's friendly local roundup | Friday, October 2, 2026
Happy Friday, Regina! 👋
Fall is handing us a gift of a weekend. Expect a high around 16°C today with only a 10 per cent chance of rain, then about 18°C on Saturday and 19°C on Sunday with no rain in the forecast. Nights stay chilly, dipping close to 1°C over the weekend, so bring a warm layer if you're heading to Mosaic tonight.
The Riders host Calgary for Lights Out tonight, and a familiar face is back in the locker room. We've also got cheap seats for a city-wide Pats party, a father and daughter leading Regina's honour walk, 50 years of First Nations University of Canada and a surprise October visitor nobody invited. Then it's a packed weekend: Oktoberfest, Celtic rock at Darke Hall, a baby and toddler expo and plenty of free fun at the library. Let's get into it.

🏈 RIDERS

Brett Lauther is back in green and white
The Roughriders have brought kicker Brett Lauther home, acquiring him from the Ottawa Redblacks in exchange for Saskatchewan's fifth-round draft pick. Among Rider kickers with more than 100 attempts, the 35-year-old from Truro, Nova Scotia, owns the best field goal accuracy in team history. Saskatchewan let him go in February, just months after the Grey Cup-winning season. Over his first eight seasons in Regina he made 295 of 360 field goals, and in 12 games with Ottawa this year he went 32 for 34.
His reintroduction at Mosaic Stadium on Thursday turned into a reunion. "As you would think, lots of hugs, lots of smiles," head coach Corey Mace said, adding that Lauther has meant a lot to the team over the years. Lauther called the return surreal. Fans will need a little patience, though: Mace confirmed Dawson Hodge will handle the kicking against Calgary on Friday night.
Welcome home, Brett.

The I Love Regina Pats Game is back, and tickets are $13
The City of Regina is hosting its second annual I Love Regina Pats Game on Sunday, November 1, when the Pats take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Brandt Centre. Every seat is $13 plus taxes and fees, which makes it one of the most affordable games of the season. The puck drops at 2 p.m., and each person through the doors gets a free co-branded I Love Regina and Regina Pats merchandise item. Mayor Chad Bachynski said the game celebrates what makes Regina a great place to call home, for lifelong fans and first-timers alike.
The party starts at noon with a free pre-game event featuring face painting, bouncy castles, a fire truck and other City vehicles and machinery. Once the game wraps, ticket holders are invited onto the ice for a public skate with the Pats players. Bring your own skates, since rentals won't be available, and anyone 15 or younger needs a helmet. Proceeds from I Love Regina merchandise sold at the game go to Growing Young Movers and its work revitalizing Parkdale Park.
Thirteen bucks, a free souvenir and a skate with the team. Mark the calendar.

A Regina father and daughter dance at the front of the honour walk
David Brass and his seven-year-old daughter, Meilani, were the front dancers at the Circle Project's annual honour walk through downtown Regina on Wednesday, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Brass, a dancer from the Key First Nation, grew up without learning his culture. Today he's the first in his family to relearn those traditions, and dance is how he's doing it. "I dance to feel whole again," he said. Brass added that he was glad to see the day centred on children, and that sharing it with his daughter gives him hope for the future.
The walk honours the roughly 150,000 Indigenous children who were taken from their families to attend residential schools, along with their families. Nelson Bird of Peepeekisis Cree Nation carries the Every Child Matters flag every year, and he said this year's crowd was the biggest he has seen, with more young families from all backgrounds joining in. Edith McKee, 79, wore an orange shirt for the first time, honouring her mother, who attended Elkhorn Residential School.
🎓 EDUCATION

First Nations University of Canada celebrates 50 years
First Nations University of Canada is marking a half-century. The institution opened in 1976 as Saskatchewan Indian Federated College and has since grown to campuses in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. A gala at the Hotel Saskatchewan on September 10 headlined the anniversary year, which also included a ceremony at the university in the spring. President Jacqueline Ottmann told the crowd the dream goes back to Treaty 4 leaders who rode to Ottawa in 1910 and 1911 and called for a First Nation-owned and -operated institution of higher learning.
Ottmann also honoured the people who made it real, including Dr. Sol Sanderson and the institution's first leader, the late Ida Wasacates. When payroll once came up short, Wasacates asked her mother to return a gold brick she had given her, which was being used as a doorstop, so staff could be paid. Former president Eber Hampton drove up from Tennessee for the gala. Ottmann told SaskToday that students come to see the university as home, and that reconciliation should be lived all year, not on a single day.
Fifty years in, and the best chapters are still ahead.
🦟 CITY UPDATE

Yes, those are mosquitoes. Here's why they're back.
If you've been slapping at your ankles in October, you're not imagining things. Regina is dealing with a late-season wave of mosquitoes, thanks to a wet year that left lots of standing water around the city and a warm start to fall. Mike Thomas, executive director of Football Saskatchewan, told 980 CJME the bugs have been relentless at fields in the Regina area, and that it feels like summer all over again. They're an annoyance for players, he said, but they haven't cancelled any games or practices.
Ashley Thompson, the City of Regina's manager of parks technical services, said exact numbers aren't available because the city's mosquito monitoring wrapped up on September 11, though counts do seem higher than normal for this time of year. The city won't be spraying parks or public spaces. Thankfully, Thompson expects this round to be brief: with mornings and nights turning cool, the bugs shouldn't last long. Thomas noted that many stores had already pulled bug spray off the shelves.
Keep the repellent handy a few more days. The cold is on our side.
